Need help in remodel layout

We have a 2 story townhouse with one common wall with neighbor. This townhouse has 1600 SF. Upstairs is 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. Downstairs I as you walk in has kitchen with W/D in it of 90-100. SF including pantry. Behind kitchen is separate DR of 150 SF also separated from GR in back which is 300 SF. Also downstairs is small half bath and closet with HVAC under stairs leading to second floor. The TH is 35 years old and exterior is brick and vinyl with wooden deck off the GR. We are trying to figure out how we can reconfigure to open up the downstairs. Should we open up kitchen to DR or DR to GR? Should we move W/D upstairs ? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

This isn't enough information to make helpful suggestions. Please post floor plans of both floors, laid out to scale on graph paper (the best ratio is 1 sq = 1 sq. foot). Please include measurements of everything and identify the load bearing walls (and other things that would make it expensive to move a wall -- plumbing/HVAC, etc.).

it makes a lot of sense to move the washer dryer upstairs since that's where everyone is getting dressed and undressed. The argument against that is that if it leaks it causes a lot more problems than if it leaks on the first floor.

Many people like to have the kitchen and dining room open onto each other, other people can't stand it because they want all of the kitchen sights and smells in the kitchen and not in the dining room.

If you want help on opening up the first floor you will need to post a floor plan of the first floor and identify which walls and windows absolutely cannot being moved and which are loadbearing as they will be much more costly to move.

You should also let us know if you like the current location of the downstairs bath and kitchen...and whether the kitchen is currently functional and in good shape or if you intend to gut the whole thing.
