Time to shop for under- and in-cabinet lighting

The electrician has wired for the lighting, I just have to decide what I want to put in. The designer suggested puck lights in the glass cabinets and fixtures under. We ruled out the LED tape because of the arrangement of our kitchen - too many transformers which drove the price up. Which brands should I look at?

Oh, I forgot to ask this - do the puck lights just stick on or are there recessed ones that can be installed by drilling a hole in the top of the cabinet? Seem that would be a cleaner look.

And where do I place the light fixture that goes under the cabinet - towards the front?

    Thanks.

Puck lights come in xenon. halogen, led etc and can be surface mounted as well as recessed, although the xenons tend to emite quite a bit of heat so recess is not suggested.

Do you have a length you would like to cover as well as buget to give us an idea, also what is the depth of the undercounter valance?

Most people tend to mount the UCL towards the front, so the light shines down directly over the work area.

I used LED bars (Designer Series) from InspiredLED. You can email them your cabinet layout and they will send you a design and quotation. They can be interconnected via ROMEX in the walls, reducing the number of transformers required. My quotation was 1/3 the cost of the local lighting specialist.

Some manufacturers make LED light bars with integral transformers/drivers (direct wire).

hi gooster or anyone else..what did you spend on undercab lighting. I know it ranges, but are we talking hundreds or thousands?

Mine is probably expensive, under two thousand. I will have docking devices for phones and iPad, outlets and under counter lighting, plus puck lights in the one glass doored cabinet between the range and sink.

For tape light in two 33x42" uppers and UCL bars (with integrated diffusers) for 33", 33", 42", and 30" cabinets the total was $317, including shipping, tax and all necessary pieces..

we used simple led light strips that simply plug in and mount under the cabinet. They give a nice clean light, no heat and simple install. A 16 inch light bar cost $22. My husband put a outlet to plug them into - in the cabinet and made it turn on with a wall switch. so we simply plugged them in.

We placed them under the cabinet at the front

I also used the Designer Series from Inspired LED for my under-cabinet lighting and the thin profile tape for inside of glass cabinets. (The cabinet lighting is not yet installed but all the wiring is done. I just haven't put it in place.) They designed the system for me and you can interconnect a certain number of their units on a single transformer- I have two strips under my cabinets (they made custom lengths for me) and several strips for inside the cabinets and all are connected to a single transformer under a joist in our (open ) basement. And all are powered on a single Lutron dimmer switch. Our space is still under construction so I've tested them but haven't lived with them yet... so I can't say if I like them. But the company was great to deal with and really reasonable. I considered the maxlite self-driven bar because I liked that it was all in one and did not require a separate transformer but since it would not work in the cabinets, I ended up choosing Inspired since I could do one stop shopping. Hope this helps.

You can still do LED tape lights. We ran speaker wire (rated for in wall use) in our walls to the different cabinet runs. A single 12V transformer powers it all and is plugged into a switched outlet installed above one of the cabinets.
