Here's a view from below of mine. You can't see the box when looking straight on but I imagine with no light rail that you'd be able to see it a little.

Swentastic, I would not spoil the clean look of your planned beautiful open shelving with a plug mold attached to the bottom, and subsequently cords hanging from it.
I would place the receptacles horizontally, and low on the backsplash. Just my 2 cents...

ctydm (I wish I knew your real name - you've been so helpful). Now that I'm seeing these junction boxes and envisioning this thing stuck on the bottom of the shelf I'm tending to agree. I wasn't as concerned with the cords hanging but I really don't think there's going to be any way to avoid seeing the plugmold given that our kitchen is long and narrow and everything will be viewed on an angle.

This really screws me up for the backsplash though - I think the plugs horizontally and low on the backsplash will work just fine, now how do I rectify the outlets in the 3x12" glass tile. I'm going to research glass outlet covers, or maybe stainless? i'd like to keep it clean and tidy as possible, and not require the tileguy to do too much cutting.

andreak100 - that had occurred to me too, but since we're installing the shelves using 1/2" rods that will be epoxied inside the shelf, I'm afraid they would interfere at some point. The shelves will only be 1.69" thick and the plugmold itself is probably at least an inch thick, if not more, not to mention the junction box issue is still there. It's a great thought tho - we were headed in the same direction!

Jeez I hope this all turns out well or I'm gonna feel like a big dummy!
