HELP... Which layout is better for my kitchen?

Curious which layout is better? I have attached a photo of my 12x8 kitchen. I already partially removed a wall between the kitchen and dining room, as you can see on the rendered image to the right.

I am debating a small island, but only a 36"cabinet will fit, max. This leaves a total of 36" on either side for passage, and the counter depth fridge on the right (which has room to open w/ someone standing within the 36". (given the Open Concept design).

The current layout is that to the right. Which is better for me? Images are to scale.

Once you factor an 1" or more for counter overhang your down to between 33"-34"... kinda narrow. As much as I love islands in a kitchen; I think the one rendered might be small to be particularly functional and may end up more of a dumping ground then anything else.
