Wow, thanks for sharing. I'm a KD and I saved a few for my 'inspiration' files. I have thousands of digital pix saved over the years.

I love:
-the tile inserts. How creative that is. Stained glass doesn't show up well without lighted cabinets. Yours looks awesome all the time.
-cute banquette. I like the wainscotting and sconces.
-I like the 'shaker crown'...soffit, and shaker crown at the ceiling. Very nice!

You have a beautiful kitchen!

Wow - soooo many great features! Love the banquette with the wainscotting, the cabinets, backsplash, the leaded glass and those tiles in the doors - what an inspired idea... my list goes on and on. You did a beautiful job! Magnificent!

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

Very nice Craftsman feel to your kitchen! Beautiful cabinets, and I also love the tile inserts. Brilliant. You should be very proud of your work.

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

Great kitchen! It looks modernized but still period-perfect for the house. I especially love the accents - the backsplash tile, the leaded glass transom (*cough* stealing that idea for my kitchen *cough*), the stained glass in the uppers.

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

That can't possibly be the same space?! It's all gorgeous but I'm partial to those quartersawn oak cabinets (my favorite wood). And that stained glass transom - nice touch!

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

Love it! The quarter-sawn oak is just so beautiful!
What kind of wood is your flooring? And is it just a clear stain?

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

You did a wonderful job! I really like your new kitchen; all the details work so well together. The Motawi tiles are a great extra touch.

I think it is such a gift for kids to see and help with projects like you just completed. That has a value far above getting a beautiful new kitchen!

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

Wow what a change. It's fabulous and I love that even though it's updated, it feels appropriate to the house's age :) I adore the tile inserts...I'm gonna copy those copying it heh heh I have an 1889 kitchen to get started on and you provide great inspiration.

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

I am always jealous of quartersawn oak kitchens, and yours is no exception for that...But OH MY GOSH, how GREAT are those tiles inset into your cabinets?!!!!!!! A wonderful touch. A like the stepped soffit over the fridge and microwave cabs, and how the crown molding fits under and in. Nice lighting choices...I particularly like the wall sconces.

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

Fantastic! That kitchen has the kind of understated worksmanship that's perfect for the period while not being a period kitchen.

I think the transom over my stairway window just got more expensive...

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

Wow - that is fabulous!!! Truly truly a Craftsman kitchen and so appropriate for the house.

I notice you do not have any recessed lights - can you advise me of how many ceiling fixtures you have and the size of the room? Do you find the lighting enough? I am worrying myself silly right now because I chose not to put recessed lights in my ceiling (1927 house) and now it is drywalled and too late to change. I will have undercabinet lights and I hope I did not make a mistake. I notice your undercabinets run the whole length of the cabinets. Mine will be slightly shorter than the cabinet (around 4" on each end). I hope they will be OK. I would love your feedback.

I agree - the tile inserts are just a master touch. Congratulations on a fabulous job.

It's gorgeous! I love love love your cabinets.

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

Oh my . . . beautiful job. There are so many features that you've put in your kitchen -- I've added you to my clippings!

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

Bravo, Dave!!!

You did a great job of capturing the craftsman feel in a very now kitchen. It's perfectly appropriate without being twee.

Gorgeous!

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

Well done! It's beautiful! Really great layout. Love the subway tile - nice balance between the wood and a bit of light with the reflection. Never seen the Shaker crown before and like it!

Beautiful.

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

Oooo...very nice! It looks like a perfect 'updated' craftsman kitchen. Love those cabinets, the crown, the tiles and especially the transom. I LOVE transoms, and the leaded glass is gorgeous.

Great job!

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

Beautiful! I love the cabinets, layout, and lighting.

That's the best temporary sink!!! :)

Question: do you always have to demo all the way down to the studs every single time?

Thanks,
Amanda

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

I have got to tell you....your kitchen is stunning down to the last detail!! I think one of my favorite parts (besides the quartersawn oak) is those tile inserts in the upper cabinets. Gorgeous!!

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

Thanks for all the wonderful positive responses. Thanks kitchenkelly for the tip--my post was originally in "gallery" view and I got no feedback for a day or so and assumed no one liked my kitchen! But the response has been great since I put it in the right place.
Anyway, I would like to respond in detail to each of the specific questions, however I travel a lot so sometimes I can't respond right away (like now). I will, in the next few days, respond fully.
Thanks again for the great feedback!

I agree with everything everyone else has said - fantastic cabinets, beautiful tile insets, gorgeous beveled glass transom! Everything goes with everything else so well. What a wonderful warm family kitchen! Congratulations!! You did an outstanding job of the designing, the choices you made, and all the work!

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

Dave, I can't think of enough adjectives to describe how beautiful your kitchen is! Your attention to detail is impeccable! You truly brought a tired old home back to life. Great Job!

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

Beautiful. Love the cabinets. Actually - I love it all.

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

Wow that is just beautiful! I'm almost glad this was posted long after my "white" kitchen was completed or I would be putting in a quartersawn oak kitchen I think!!! This does give me some ideas for a wet bar at some point in the future though! What sort of stain was used on the cabinetry, it's just beautiful, the whole space!

Enjoy!

Kat :)

RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

Wow!! What a beautiful transformation! The kitchen looks like it fits your house perfectly, and it seems like a space you'll want to spend many hours in. I just love so many things about it! You must be so pleased.

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

I've added your kitchen to my inspiration file! We'll be building on an acreage, near a woods and your kitchen contains lots of wonderful elements that provide tons of inspiration. Love the quarter sawn oak and the Mowtawi tiles have always been a favorite. I love your use of them! The whole kitchen is beautiful! Love your little helper, too!

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

Amazing, amazing- thank you so much for sharing, it's a fantastic space with really thoughtful touches. Definitely an inspiration!

RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

I love, love your kitchen! It's perfect in every way. You did a great job, and I agree that having your kid(s) help with and see a project has immense value, especially in a world where this kind of know how seems to be becoming less and less common.

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

Wow, Dave, you did it right! You've created a beautifully appropriate kitchen for a 1908 foursquare. I love all of the finishing touches, especially the leaded glass in your transom and I'm completely jealous that you have the Motawi tiles! Your old house is happy... and you made all of us smile too. You and your helper did great work!

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

Wow, what an improvement - I love it! Congratulations!

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

WOW THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for all the wonderful positive responses.
I was sometimes on the fence of the cabinet selection because we saw so many white kitchens and liked the clean feel of them, but all the positive comments and of course our own love for the finished product have reinforced that this was the right decision for us.

A few responses to sepcific questions:

pbear_2007: the floor is actually the old one recycled (patched, sanded, polyurethaned). It was heavily stained (dark brown) and borken in places. The wood is Birch and simply has 3 coats of poly-u. No stain

While my son was helpful it was also incredibly helpful when my wife took him off site for entire days at a time (especially around and just after demo) but lots of fun to have him around and "helping"

buffalotina:
I was really into the recessed lights since many of the KDs recommend them for general work lighting. But my wife was completely against them, especially for th period of our house. And I'm glad I listened. Here's a link http://picasaweb.google.com/daveptz/KitchenLighting#5390747282199925026
to a rough sketch of our lighting plan (actually based on the one put together by our KD) My only real regret is maybe that the fan/light is not centered in the room. Our KD was thinking this would be good general work area lighting but as it turns out, we use the undercab lights most and the fan blows a little too close to the gas range when it's on high. Initially, it seemed like the north end of the kitchen might not have enough light (relative to the very well-lit south end) but in fact no work occurs there so it's really not necessary to have more light than we do there. As you can see from the before and afters, of course, the improvements over the old lighting (1 fan/light) are vast.

Anyway, hope you have enough fixtures--we definitely feel we went overbaord a little, but better that than not enough!

Amanda (huango): No you definitely do not always have to demo everything. It does open up several cans of worms, on bug one is that in most jurisdictions, you need to update plumbing, wiring, etc. if the wall is opened, but not if there is no gutting. I knew that the wiring in this kitchen was antiquated and we moved a door and a window over (framing moved) which would have required at least some demo around the two anyway. Wanting to put in all new wiring and insulate the outside wall (which had none) it was really a requirement for us. It really just comes down to the extent and scope of your project, the age of your house, and how much work you want to take on.

Kat (lesmis): The stain on the cabs is a custom gel stain from our local paint shop, Abbott Paint in St Paul, MN. My cabinetmaker gave me a quart for touch-ups as well as the recipe. If you are interested, I can email it to you or post it here, as I don't know if it has a name.

Thanks again for all the great comments!

Just beautiful... especially the wood on those understated and wonderful cabinets. Congratulations!

Thank you so much for the lighting plan. Now I feel I definitely have enough lights. I have a similar sized space and a similar lighting layout so I think now it will be fine.

Again, your kitchen is fabulous and it also makes me yearn for a QS oak kitchen. I think it is truly one of the nicest I have seen as it seems to be light and airy despite being oak. I think what I really like is that you have not overdone the Mission theme which can easily happen.

I saw your kitchen on the Gallery side - so glad you posted it over here. Just beautiful, and I LOVE those Motawi tiles. Your little helper is pretty cute too :-)

Congrats on a great job!

to call it 'creative' is an understatement! The before pictures do nothing to inspire, yet you were inspired. Your kitchen is truly one to look to when the undo able seems impossible for many here, and me....one day...

 o
RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

I haven't stopped back since I saw your pics in the gallery. Again, I think your kitchen is fabulous. Of course, I need to say something about the banquette. Your is better! I love that you brought the height up in back. (Why didn't I think of that?) I also like the warmth that the wood brings to bench top.

Congrats!

For all intents and purposes my kitchen build has been over for nearly 2 years, but I can't help but log in from time to time to see what's new here.

So glad I checked in while your new kitchen pictures were posted. You did a fantastic job. I love it for all the reasons that people cited above, and I hope you and your family are enjoying your beautiful new space. Congratulations!

Dave I would love the formula!! We plan to do some built in cabinetry in the not too distant future and I would love to have it look just like yours! That color is perfect.

You can email me at swlesmis@hotmail.com

Thank you!

RE: Remodel Complete - 1908 Foursquare, Shaker Quartersawn Oak Ki

Thanks again for all the great feedback. It validates the process to an even greater degree.
Kitchenkelly-
I'm not sure I agree our banquette is better--just different. I based out design on your and on one I saw Crownpoint had crafted from their website. We really liked the dignified look of the high back but I still think your morgue drawer takes the cake! Thanks again,
dave
