99% finished ocean inspired kitchen

| Well, I'm posting finished pictures now, though I still need window treatments and the surrounding rooms are far from finished. I wanted to thank everyone on the boards...a few particular shout outs to lesmis (Kat) for the cabinet color and yesdear for sharing here photos of her brazialian black soapstone. So here are some before and after photos.
And a few more finished pictures:
And finally, the details:
Cabinets: DeWils Horizon Line (Frameless) Shaker with Bead and beadboard large drawers and accents with BM Simply White paint
Hardware: Hardware Resources Durham pulls and knobs in Dark Antique Copper Machined
Counters: Brazilian Black Soapstone and Carrara Marble
Backsplash: Grazia Rixi subways in Reef (2x5 subways) with Mandorla Border Pieces to frame the mosaic. The mosaic is a custom mixed medium mosaic that was done by a local tile artist and I got to help. Some of the tile is from different parts of our house, some of the shells are from a friends wedding, others are some my daughter got on the beach.
Paint: Dunn-Edwards Peace River
Floor: Engineered Maple mild hand-scraped 5" planks (floor extends through most of the first floor)
Fridge: GE Profile FD with water in door and ice maker in second freezer drawer
Cooktop: GE Monogram
Hood: Modernaire 600 cfm insert with wood hood by Stanisici
Dishwasher: Bosch
Double Oven: GE Monogram with Trivection (upper oven) and Convection (lower oven)
Sink: Rohl Allia (30" Fireclay)
Faucet: Kohler Vinnata in Chrome
We took down two soffits, but had to keep two more, the ones we kept shortened in depth and height. It took about 3 months because the remodel involved other parts of the house include exterior door and window work.
Thanks to everyone for they're help!

| Becktheeng, Oh! Oh!! Oh!!! Just fabulous! I love the wall color, the backsplash color, the beadboard, everything! The mosaic is still gorgeous, of course! And that "Seaside" on the range hood mantle is the perfect touch! You did a great job! Congratulations! |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen

| Congrats! It looks fabulous, fabulous! So crisp with the white cabs & blue paint & soapstone... Enjoy it, well done! Katie |

| Oh THAT is lovely! DH has been wanting to paint the kitchen in our new home a watery blue color but I've been nay-saying the idea because of reading that blue was not a good color for kitchens. Fung shui says something about blue depressing the appetite - alhough in my case depressing the appetite would be a GOOD thing. LOL! Plus, although I find fung shui interesting, I don't really understand it and am definitely not a die-hard believer. Still, I was having a hard time finding any pictures of blue-painted kitchens that really appealed to me. Your kitchen looks so lovely and peaceful though I just may let DH talk me into blue after all. Of course he also wants stained wood cabinets instead of painted. (What is it about men and stained wood anyway???) I'm not at all sure stained wood cabs with blue paint would yield the same lovely peaceful result you've achieved. Maybe I'll show him your pics and give him a choice: I'll give you blue paint and you let me have white or cream painted cabinets. OR, you can have stained cabinets and I get to pick a nice warm "foody" color for the paint. Ah the compromises. Thanks for sharing your lovely kitchen. |

| What a gorgeous kitchen! You must be so thrilled. I love the story behind the mosaic and the source of the shells you used - such a personalized touch. The glass subway tiles, the soapstone, the cabinets, hardware, all your color selections and the way you put them all together are just perfect. BTW, the way you designed this, you don't even notice the soffits. Great, great job! |

| Thanks everyone, it came out like I had pictured...now to finish the nook and the other rooms! The key to making the kitchen more functional was to move the dishes/glass/silverware and snacks out of the cooking area...makes dinner prep so much nicer...no kids underfoot setting the table. Eastcoast...thanks for the compliment on the soffits! That's what I was going for! They were so huge before...I tried to get rid of all of them, but had to keep two! |

| Really really lovely! Your cabinets are gorgeous and classic and that blue is such a serene shade. I love the little nook with baskets and the bay window!!! I hope you enjoy your new kitchen:) |

| I am a fan of your backsplash and mosaic. I too love how you incorporated different types of stone in the mosaic. Your kitchen is very pretty. Is that a slab of marble you were able to get in there too? The wood floor has a rich warm stain, and I like the free standing creamy colored cabinet next to the kitchen too. Creams just warm up the blues and whites of the ocean! Congratulations! |

It came out BEAUTIFULLY! What a great wall color with your other choices. You know I love the blue and that Rixi tile and mosaic. ENJOY. Priscilla |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen

| Fleur...that is a little bit of marble...I would have loved to do it all in Marble, but I'm not a careful cook and new i would ruin it quickly. Originally I was trying to figure out how to get emprador dark marble in there, but the carrara worked better with the SS. I also wanted a wood counter, so the hutch gives me that! So, I got a deal on a remanant. It is honed so that it works with the SS. I also like to bake, so I can roll dough over there if I want. |

| Serene, classy, clean, GORGEOUS! And I love your FP surround, with the river rocks. I'm guessing that was new, also? Really really nice choices. |

| Compliments on your coastal living kitchen. I would love to see a close-up of the tile mural. My daughters and grandkids collected lots of sea glass this summer and my DH has the idea to incorporate it in a wall design. He's thinking fish. Enjoy your kitchen. |

| YEH! It's fantastic! It has come together oh so nicely. Your kitchen is beautiful. I LOVE the blue walls (blue is my fav. color). I hope you are enjoying it, I know I sure would be. I love the fireplace and your yard is beautiful. Congradulations!!! |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen

| Oooo...I love it! I was going to do my kitchen in the same kind of colour scheme, but I had just done my main bathroom in that dreamy colour of blue, with white and black, and now you're making me rethink my choices in the kitchen again. I love it!! I'd like to see a close up of that mosaic too...it looks very pretty! Great job, enjoy your beautiful new space!! |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen

| Lithigin - The fireplace surround is Mexican Beach Pebble, we looked at river rock and it was too brown/tan or grey, we happened to see this and fell in love. The fireplace transformation was truely amazing. For those of you who wanted a close up of the mosaic...

| I just love your coastal inspired kitchen! Your blue subway tile backsplash with the mosaic make it so cheery and serene. What a transformation from your old kitchen. Hope it brings a smile to your face with every meal you cook! |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen

| Wow! Congrats on an incredible transformation, Becktheeng! Thanks for including closeup mosaic picture too! I am looking for inspiration on designing one for us and yours is really helpful for pointing me in the right direction! |

| Love your colors, that great backsplash, and pretty much everything about your kitchen! |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen

| Gorgeous kitchen - especially the mosaic. Your choice of cabinets, counters & wall color are all so perfect! Job well done:) |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen

| Becktheeng, What soffits? I think they look totally integrated with your kitchen! I also see that you have DeWils cabinets too. I love the feel of ours even uninstalled! How do you like the double drawer freezer? I am thinking about that for when we have to replace ours in a few years. Is it easy to get things in and out of and was it easy to design around? Thanks! |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen
| | |
| I would just stand in the middle and look back and forth at the mosaic, then the fireplace! How beautiful. So relaxing. You must be so happy and proud. I love it! |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen
| | |
| Congratulations on the beautiful renovation! I am so inspired by your choices and the color is fabulous. I have chimed in before on the gorgeous mosaic, lucky you to have that splendid sun shining cheerily into your kitchen. Enjoy! |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen

| What a cheerful and friendly kitchen! You did a fabulous job! |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen

| Beck, I've said it before, but it bears repeating...your kitchen turned out so well! I LOVE that mural and it really is the showpiece of your kitchen. Everything came together beautifully! Enjoy! It looks like you've been converted to a "non" curtain household too! :) We haven't put a single curtain up since our reno and we don't plan to! Kat :) |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen

| becktheeng - Can I ask you about the cost for your cabinetry (and while we're at it, the cost for your countertop). I'm looking for a beaded shaker full overlay cabinet maker that's along the pricepoint of KraftMaid. Did you paint them yourself/contractor or did they come painted from the cabinetmaker? Thanks! |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen
| | |
| Thanks all...I do love it...it's so much more me than the old kitchen. earthpal - I love the double drawer freezer...It helped break up the line of he huge bottom freezer. I keep frequently used freezer stuff in the top...frozen veggies, gogurts. The bottom drawer has two levels, the top one is shallow and has the ice in it. The bottom is a large basket. I love the functionality, and the look. Of course the best thing is the fridge at eye leveland the water in the door. lesmis - thanks for the compliments...I love your kitchen! On the windows....that's part of the 1%...I have to have something on them for the winter (I know crazy) because the sun in the back is blinding (notice the glare and it's only October). We will be putting in woven woood blinds. dcfixerupper - I don't mind sharing at all as I know how helpfull that is. We didn't price kraftmaid, I did price Schuler at Lowe's. So, I had all the cabinets, with the hood, and the blower, and custom paint (cabinet guy has a painter he uses) and install for about $24k. The Dewils is all plywod, frameless...I don't have many bells and whistles..the main one is the pull out chopping block and pull out trash to the left of the sink. The cabinet guy made the corner sink cabinet in his shop so that I could fit my sink...the angled walls make it a challenge. The lowe's quote was Schuler was $22k no install or interior upgrades and I had to use their color. The soapstone and marble were about $5,500 installed...more than I budgeted, but I just fell in love with soapstone! Let me know if you have any other questions. |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen

| Pretty and peaceful! I love personal touches in kitchens, and that you had a hand in the mosaic is just great. I like your corner drawer stack. Are the drawers extra-deep there? Your range mantle is the perfect touch. Is there any storage behind the shelf? Did you change the ceiling? Looks like it was a cove ceiling of some sort before-- maybe still is? Anyway, your space turned out so nicely. Enjoy! |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen
| | |
| Morton- I don't have extra deep drawers there...I wish I did, but the cabinet guy wasn't into making the drawers deeper (custom) and said that my cabinet company wouldn't do it either...not really a problem as I seem to be able to fit everything in the kitchen (though I still have a little to add). The counter is extra deep...and so is the wall cabinet next to the window to make the corner with the soffit look right. You can acess the blower behind the shelf, but it's not much space back there, and it's not too easy to get the cover on and off. I had 4 soffits (so it looked like a tray ceiling as the old owners had removed the huge flourescent light and replaced with crown and can lighting). In the old kitchen they were about 2' high and at least 2 feet deep. It made my 9' ceiling feel like a 7' ceiling. I hated it. I had to keep the one on the window wall and the one on the fridge wall. beck |

| becktheeng - Thanks for the info on pricing! I may look into DeWils cabinetry as the beaded shaker for full overlay is surprisingly hard to find. Did you go through your contractor to purchase or a large cabinet dealer? |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen
| | |
| dc...I went through a local small cabinet shop that rep'd 2 lines, and could do custom work (important for my crazy 45 degree walls). My cabinet maker loves working with DeWils, he said that they always deliver on time! He said he wished they start making painted finishes, but likes the fact that you can at least order them primed and ready for paint. I liked the fact that I got to pick my own color. We had to order a few other things (after we recieved the initial shipment) and they came very quickly. |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen

| I love your kitchen! It is so original and beautiful :) I am considering using Rixi tiles (Mandorla color) for my backsplash, but can't decide on what grout joint size to use. Could you please tell me what you used with your tiles? Also, did you use sanded or unsanded grout? Thanks in advance! |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen

| I just love the dreamy blue and white quality of it, congratulations on a job well done. You must be so proud :) |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen
| | |
| ni...I think the spacing is slightly less than 1/4". The Frame of my mosaic is done in the Mandorla color. The grout is Alabaster (color). It matches the Mandorla color really well. I can't remember if it's sanded or not. I will try to look tonight. |

| Absolutely wonderful! Question, was it a good idea to move the MW to sit under the counter? Do you ever boil a cup of water (for instance, for tea) or heat a cup of milk (for instance, for latte)? |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen
| | |
| What lovely colors. There was a thread about blue kitchens a ways back. This is the right way to do it! I really love the way you did this. |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen

| What amazing changes you've made! It has a wonderfully fresh quality to it. Nice work. |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen

| Emily- I like the MW under the counter...certainly better than taking up counter space by my cooktop! I will say that I don't use the MW a ton. I use it for Easy Mac for the kids, frozen veggies, popcorn, heating water for instant oatmeal. I don't have a great back, but it doesn't bother me to get stuff in and out. But I use it less than 1 per day. On the other hand, I'm hoping the kids (3 and 6)will be able to use it soon, so low is good. Thanks for all the compliments, hopefully I will have some updated shots of the nook area soon. They are building my banquette. I was hoping to be done by Christmas, but it maybe a bit longer to get all the window treatments done. |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen
| | |
| Thank you for the reply about the MW. I am trying to do a "minimalist" kitchen (white plain cabinets with no pulls, paneled refrigerator, and minimally visible oven) because it's an open kitchen. I have found a way to hide or minimize everything but the MW???!! It's either at eye level (running counter to the look) or under the counter (uncomfortable). DO post your pictures. I love the clean, relaxed, and happy mood of your kitchen. (That's how I see it.) |
RE: 99% finished ocean inspired kitchen
| | |
| I remeber seeing MWs on here that were behind pocket cabinet doors that you could just open up when you wanted to use it. I think there was a thread on this a while ago, but since the search is down, I can't seem to find it. I stuck with the white so it would "blend" into the cabinets. |

| I just love the changes you made and now your kitchen is just beautiful! I love the wall color, the kitchen cabinets design and the BM Simply White paint color that you chose, the backsplash color, the beadboard, The Seaside writing, that gorgeous refrigerator and I can go on and on. Thank you so much for sharing the details. |
