| Thinking about adding an island to my kitchen but because of the removal of a load bearing wall I will have to have support columns. Does anyone have any great ideas for incorporating two cloumns into an island? Pictures appreciated! |

| Here is what we did. One column is actually stationary & part of the wall (pilaster), one is free. I now see you want info for an island & This is a peninsula, maybe it will help as well. |
|
| That's dramatic! I don't think that would work with my house but I can visualize it without the extra molding at the top, then it could work. |
|
| acountryfarm I like what you did. Very creative and it gives you nice separation and architectural details at the same time. I like how you did your penninsula and I'll keep this in mind if we go that route. Really I could use ideas for either. Not sure which way we will go at this point. Depends on whether my DH has an opinion and I think he will on this. |

Here's another pic I found. another: One last one: If you could post a drawing that shows exactly where your column is and the dimensions of your windows, that might help us come up with some ideas. |

| Hi mpeg. We are in the process of bumping out our kitchen and family room and had the exact same problem (but we had support structures running the opposite way so put one column in the island and one in a half wall separating the kitchen and family room) I spent countless hours looking for kitchen columns and amassed quite a collection. It may be easier if I emailed the pictures to you???? |

| Oh thank you thank you thank you! We've got the same situation. I'd rather take them out but we don't want to take out that load-bearing beam. All these photos are giving me wonderful ideas for dressing the posts. Did I say thank you? |

| OH WOW....that is awesome karalouise... it might be enough to convince me NOT to take out our bearing wall! I knew you guys would some through! |
|
| Thank you so much for all the pictures.......Jackpot! karalouise, if one of those wouldn't work then nothing will! Feel free to email photos to mhillyrd@grm.net I know that had to take you forever to post those maybe it will help someone else too. But if you have more, feel free to email. Thanks too everyone for the photos and time that went into this. I'm just now checking in today. Now I'm going to just look them all over and overthink things as usual. Fun!!! |

| remodelfla, It's enough to make you think twice about tearing out a load bearing wall isn't it. Does anyone have any favorites? My husband will like the 5th one down that karalouse posted because he has always wanted me to do some small upper cabinets with glass above the bar, or iland. |

| Hello again. I agree, their are fabulous people on here!! I began my project last January and pretty much lurked through Garden Web the entire way! I always seemed to be "learning" something from others but I felt I was never able to contribute anything, which is why I was thrilled to see someone looking for support columns........I can't tell you how many countless hours I spent looking for a solution to our column/dropped beam debauchle! I was FINALLY able to answer someone elses question!! |
|
| karalouise, I feel the same way. I'm in the middle of a dilemma making a decision on my kitchen. But Hopefully oncce I have some experience and survive this process I will be able to help others too. FWIW, I love, love , how your kitchen is turning out. I have looked at Shiloh cabinets too. I can't wait to see the finished product. Please post when you get that gorgeous granite installed~~~~~ |
