I made my array of glass cabinets lighted with rope light behind the faceframes. I installed five years ago, and have replaced the rope lights three times, and the current set (#4) has already burned out at one end. I'm going to look into LED rope lights. I understand they can last longer.
I used the plastic clips. Some are very brittle, so be careful.
About a year ago, I got some "free" plate glass and cut glass shelves, and they really complete the effect.

Have you considered having glass shelves cut and replacing the wooden ones? This really isn't a particularly expensive proposition and really makes a tremendous difference. Then you could easily use traditional cabinet lighting mounted in the top of the cabinet.
