Technivorm coffee maker

| After researching different coffee makers I decided to go with a technivorm. I had been looking at a cusinart but changed my mind after reading some of the posts here at GW.
I thought it had a special filter that came with it. Do I still need the number 4 filters? If so are they readily available? We just have a normal Mr Coffee machine now.

| No. 4 filters are available everywhere, including your local grocery store. I don't know if the Technivorm comes with a special gold filter, but my Capresso did and I rarely use it - it lets a small amount of sediment through - I strongly prefer the paper filters. |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker
| | |
| Yes, I think it comes with the gold filter. Which is why I was unclear if I still needed additional #4 filters. Do you use both ever? Would that impede the coffee making process? I saw some at sweetmarias and they were pretty inexpensive but if I can get them locally, all the better. |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker
| | |
| No, I never use them together - there's no point. The only time I use the gold filter is when I'm desperate for my morning caffeine fix and I'm out of the paper filters. There may be some people who prefer the fact that the gold filter lets through a little more than the paper filters, but I'm not one of them - to me it just leaves a little sludge in the bottom of the cup. |

| By the way, I don't know which model of Technivorm you're considering but sweetmarias doesn't list the latest model of the Technivorm on their web page - the Thermo moccamaster. |

| I actually just purchased this one yesterday and am happily anticipating it's arrival within the next week. I liked the look of it better and we don't need 10 cups. We each drink about 2.5 cups per day. |

| Looks a lot like ours. We've had it for a good while....years...and it's the best coffee maker I've ever had. We have no regrets.

| My Technivorm Clubline just arrived a couple of days ago and I can't wait to use it! Our marble counters will be installed at the end of the week, so I'm waiting til the last of the dust settles before I set out any of my new things. |

| I've been thinking about ordering a Technivorm too - I just need to decide on a model and pull the trigger! Glad to see all the great reviews here... |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker

| My morning coffee is the favorite part of my day. DH always leaves to go to work and makes me a cup of coffee and leaves it for me. If I sleep too late and its cold or I need more (if?!?) the rest is usually cold and burnt tasting. I was looking for a carafe style maker to go with my new ss appliances. I started looking through posts here and although there weren't many posts regarding them, the posts that were here were glowing reviews. Intriqued, I started to research coffee makers at coffee geek and marias etc. It wasn't *that* much more than the cusinart I was considering from Lowe's, which had poor reviews from the people here. I like the looks of it and if it lives up to it's reputation, I'm going to be thrilled. I saw an online review that stated coffee from this maker equated to a "culinary orgasm". It isn't often you see no negative press on anything but I didn't find anything. I am so excited about, it's a birthday present from me to me. :) |

| Okay, I did it - I ordered the Moccamaster CD with glass carafe. I'll be sure to report back when I receive it! |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker

| Hi there. We have had the moccamaster for about a year now. We bought it with the glass carafe, as we heard that a few other brand name thermal carafes were better than the one that Technivorm uses. I don't know if this is the case or not. It does however make the best coffee I have ever had. We simply transfer the coffee after it is brewed to our own Thermos brand carafe, where it keeps forever. By the way, we follow the tips on the Sweet Maria's website- in regard to brewing the coffee in the moccamaster. Do NOT put the glass carafe under the filter of coffee right after you turn on the switches. Wait a bit, and have some water collect in the filter basket, and give it a few stirs. (We use a chop stick). It makes the coffee very concentrated, and distributes the water better. Finally- a delicious cup of HOT coffee! |

| I'm so glad to see everyone who has it likes it so much. For those who ordered from Boyd's; how long did it take to receive the maker after the initial order? |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker
| | |
| I love the carafe idea but I like my coffee HOT and the only carafe machine I ever tried cooled it off too much. I wonder how the Thermo Moccamaster does on this – it sure is a nice looking machine… |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker
| | |
| Hi again. As I have said before, this coffeemaker make incredibly good coffee, and very hot. I believe it is the only coffeemaker that consistantly makes coffee at 200 degrees. BUT... I have to stress this-Do not buy this machine for it's looks. If you do, you will be disappointed. Buy it because it makes great coffee. |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker
| | |
| "For those who ordered from Boyd's; how long did it take to receive the maker after the initial order?" I don't recall that it took any more than a few days to my house in SoCal. Pretty normal shipping time from a reputable retailer. |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker
| | |
| I ordered from Sweet Maria's and I got it two days later! $9 shipping. I called first to be sure they had it on hand, even though their website listed it as in stock. |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker

| A carafe sounds perfect to me then. I always let my coffee cool slightly before I drink it. I won't drink anything that's really hot. There is still not updated info on the site about my order and I noticed what it really said; "Please remember that we are currently shipping orders within 4 - 6 business days of receiving an order." In my giddiness in finally finding the right coffee maker I thought I had read it would be here in 4-6 days. |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker

| I ordered mine on Oct. 7th and I was told today that an order arrives from Holland early November. So, I wait impatiently. |

RE: Technivorm coffee maker

| Hello everyone, My freebie Gevalia coffee maker bit the dust, so I finally decided to buy a Technivorm Moccamaster CD10, with a glass carafe (Chrome Model # 9932) after reading all the great reviews at CoffeeGeek, and constantly being disappointed with the brewing temperature of my past drip coffee makers. I ordered mine from George Howell, terroircoffee.com last Sun and received on Thur. I ran a couple water rinses through it as suggested and we were quite delighted with our first pot this morning made with filtered water and freshly ground beans. I am not in the least disappointed with its performance. Very quiet, fast and hot. The review at CoffeeGeek is a few years old. The new models now come with the shower head dispersion rather than the single outlet, which was about the only complaint the older review had. I choose the glass carafe model; we have a nice Zorjirushi thermal carafe that I keep any left over brew for extra fresh cups later and like the feedback of seeing the coffee brew anyway. If you like to a nice fresh batch of drip coffee in the morning this is the machine to have. |

| I found out my technivorm will be here on Monday, and it's my day off! I'm pretty excited about it. Now to find the perfect grinder... |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker

| What is the perfect grinder? |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker
| | |
| perfect grinder, for coffee... I was thinking the A 9 Kitchenaid if I can find one but have read reviews they're a mess. I still love how they look though and think it would look great by the technivorm coffee maker. |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker
| | |
| I have been using the Clubline for a few months now and really like it. The coffee from my old coffee maker tasted fine to me, but mostly I just hated the teensy space allowed to pour the water into the machine--I was always dumping water all over my countertops and making a mess. Not the case with the Technivorm--very handy and easy to use. And I really like the looks of it, too. blue velvet elvis--I have the A9 coffee grinder, and it does look nifty with the Technivorm. It is a bit of a mess, but I've found that if you just give the little cap thing a tap before you remove the cup with the ground coffee, you don't end up with too many stray grounds. |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker
| | |
| klb do you like the A9 as far as a grinder goes other than the way it looks? I lost my last bid on ebay of a pretty chrome A9 that recently ended. |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker
| | |
| I do like it, but the only other sort of grinder I've used is the top load sort (similar to the picture below--these kinds really ARE a mess!) so I don't have much to compare it to. I'm sure there are other options that grind the bean as well in a tidier way, that probably even cost less...so truthfully I went with the Kitchen Aid based on looks. But--it certainly works fine, I haven't had any problems with it at all (other than being a bit messy).

RE: Technivorm coffee maker

| For a grinder I use and love my KitchenAid ProLine Grinder KPCG100. Picked it up refurbished from Amazon for less than $100. I run it on 8 (fine) for espresso, 5 (medium) for Technivorm drip and 3 (course) for press pots. Also in the running for a grinder were the Baratza Solis Maestro Plus, Mazzer Mini, & Capresso 560.01/565 Infinity Burr Grinder; these would all be good choices IMHO. Many who make only drip brewed coffee using paper filters find the coffee grind is not as critical as espresso and press. Some even prefer and feel better saturation is achieved with the dust to course particles that a whirlybird pulverizer grinder like the Krups 203-42 (above) provides. I received a free CDN thermometer with the Technivorm deal from terroir coffe by the way, so stuck in down in the brewing grounds this morning and found it read the 200 degrees F they advertise. By the time it gets in the pot it is 165 and in my ceramic cup 155...still a temp one would consider a nice HOT cup of coffee. |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker

| I got the technivorm and I'm drinking my first cup of coffee from it as I type. It was fast! It's not too hot to drink, which I like. I am using the coffee from Boyd's that they included so I'm not sure how my normal coffee will taste. DH has to have 8 oclock bean. |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker

| I just got my new Technivorm Moccamaster with the thermal carafe yesterday and it's fantastic. I ordered it on Monday from www.terroircoffee.com and it arrived the next day (of course, we're both in MA). Anyway, it works really well - brews a great cup of coffee and I think the machine looks really nice. I got a Baratza Virtuouso grinder a few weeks ago when my old grinder broke, so I decided to go all out with the new coffee maker. |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker

| My order is still on back-order. Still waiting shipment from Boyd's coffee. |

| Weissman – Can you show us a picture??? :-) I love this time of year… Since I’ve been a good girl, Santa always leaves me something under the tree… I’ll have to tell him I want a Tehnivorm. Since Santa left it, DH can’t say a word! Santa leaves something for everyone – every year… :-) |

RE: Technivorm coffee maker

| We have the Technivorm Mocchamaster, as I have said above, and also bought the Baratza Virtuoso grinder. These purchases were made about a year ago. Although I love my Technivorm, I don't think the Baratza is for most people. 1. If you use oily type of beans (dark roast), I would say your chances of getting the machine to stall will be about 100% in the course of a month. In addition, if you want very fine coffee for espresso, you will have to recalibrate the grinder. There are instructions to do so, and the company will help- but might mess up your other settings for drip coffee. I know of 3 people that have had the same problems as we have. Don't get me wrong- I still think it grinds a mean cup of coffee. In the course of a year we have contacted the company about 3x. Once they had to exchange the grinds cup due to an engineering flaw... that was on every grinder. 2. After the calibration, it never worked the same. So.. now we use it strictly for drip. We still have to tilt the machine, and pound it a bit due to the oily beans.. but eventually it gets ground. Have a look at the coffee geek website to see what others say about all the products. It is very helpful. |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker

| verysleepy - I believe they've upgraded the Baratza Virtuouso recently to correct a number of the initial problems. Recent reviews have been a lot more favorable. I don't know about oily beans though since I haven't tried. From what I've read and my own experience I actually do think it's a very good all-purpose grinder but that espresso afficiandos would probably do better with a Rocky Rancillo or Mazzer Mini. In any case, it meets my needs for mostly drip coffee and the occasional espresso. |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker
| | |
| verysleepy - Here's an updated review of the Virtuouso which indicates the fixes they made to the machine. Perhaps you could get them to fix your machine or replace it. |

RE: Technivorm coffee maker
| | |
| Hi Weissman. They already exchanged my machine once, and replaced it. Baratza's service has been fine. No problems there! Basically, I think it comes down to... that most very good grinders- $200 or more don't do the best job at drip AND for espresso. They specialize in one or the other. For drip coffee, I would not recommend one of the Krups whirr grinders, as pictured above. I definitely would go with one of the burr grinders. The problem really is compounded by using the very fresh oily beans. So... I use the Baratza- but getting kind of sick of having to shake this multi-pound unit for a number of minutes. |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker
| | |
| One note about the technivorm. I should have bought the one with the larger carafe. I always have to make a second half pot of coffee now. Perhaps it tastes better and DH is drinking more. We always had leftover coffee at 8 cups and now it's gone at a cup and a half by the time I'm done. |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker- mocchamaster
| | |
| Hi there. We have the mocchamaster which only makes a quarter of a liter more. I believe it is technivorm's largest. So... at most it would give you an extra (real) cup. I believe that all the European makers use either 4 or 5 oz measurements for their cups. |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker
| | |
| I am also looking at Technivorms and haven't quite figured out whether the new thermal carafe design keeps the coffee as hot (or almost) as the glass carafe. Does anyone have the new style? Many of the older reviews say to brew in the glass carafe and then transfer to a glass thermal carafe. I really like the idea of the thermal carafe (especially since it means one less thing to clean), but not at the expense of a really hot cup of coffee. |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker
| | |
| I have the Moccamaster with the new thermal carafe and for my purposes it's fine. It keeps the coffee quite hot for a couple of hours. I suppose a dedicated thermos might be better for keeping it longer or a little hotter, but quite frankly the coffee is so good that it just doesn't last that long around me! One thing with the new thermal carafe that I learned on the web is to put the cover on before pouring, even if you're going to pour it all out right away. The carafe itself doesn't have a spout, just a big round opening, and I found I had to be careful when pouring it without the cover on - but then I learned the trick to put the cover on and now it pours fine. |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker
| | |
| We have an older thermal coffee maker which I didn’t like because it would cool the coffee off too much. I hadn’t thought of warming it with water first (duh!). I pulled it out of storage and gave it another go. I found that I could put hot tap water in the thermos before going to bed and come morning, I could empty the still very warm water and have the thermos ready to go without the extra prep work of warming it in the morning. I’m seriously considering the Moccamaster which I’m sure will make better coffee and now I’m not worried about the cooling affect… :-) |
RE: Technivorm coffee maker
| | |
| Well, I did it. I just ordered the Technivorm Moccamaster CD with the glass carafe from Terroir Coffee. It should be here by Friday. I decided on the glass carafe rather than thermal because I did not want the extra step of preheating the pot. I figured if I was planning on keeping it longer, I'll just transfer it to one of my glass thermos carafes. Besides, the glass is easier to clean and you can always tell how much is in there. |
