my xenon undercabinet lights are too hot!

Please let me know what kind of undercabinet lights you love and why.

For our upstairs kitchenette (finished in May, just being used now as the main kitchen is being gutted) I put in these Xenon under cabinet lights:

Yowza, they are HOT! I had them on for a few hours this afternoon and then turned him off; several hours later the bottom shelf of the cabinets is still warm to the touch. That whole section of the room just radiated heat. I had assumed I'd do these in the main kitchen, too, but now that I've actually used them, I wouldn't buy them again.

I read a few threads of people saying they had xenon and didn't have a problem with heat. Mine are enclosed which might make a difference, but even if they're open that heat is still generated, it is just dissapating through the room instead of staying trapped under the cabinet, right?

I read several references to flor. t-2 lights but when I google that, the only hit I get is right here on the forum. Anyone know more about these? And

Anita

T4 fluorescent fixtures (re-purposed) here in my old kitchen. 1'' depth or thick. I like them. Very, very little heat and I like the evenly spread light.

Anyway, here's one link to T-2's. The fixture measures 15/16'' inch deep. (I got several hits so maybe you misspelled 'fluorescent'??)

Here is a link that might be useful: T-2 Undercabinet Fluorescent

Duh! the original poster wrote Flor. t-2 and I took Flor to be the brand! No wonder I didn't get any hits.

Thanks for clearing that up.

I have flourescent...way cooler. many have halogen which i think are even hotter than xenon, so stay away from those.

I have t-2's in my kitchen. I love them. I used them rather than the Xenon and the halogen as they both were too hot and I do a lot of baking with pie crust and chocolate. Neither of those can stand the heat. Mine are thin, give great light and I have "warm" color bulbs in them. If I had to do it over again, I would still choose them.

My contractor who is a confirmed Halogen man, now loves them too. BTW, the fixtures weren't expensive but the bulbs (the warm color ones) are. Just FYI

I agree. I put them under two kitchen cabinets and they were 'red-hot.' They melted candy inside the cabinet and I was afraid they'd cause a fire. I burned the back of my hand on one when I hit the light by accident. I gave up on under-cabinet lights.

I thought the Zenons were too hot - very unpleasant if you touch them accidentally. I put in T-5s and like them, but didn't know about the T2's and am jonesing over them just now because they're a little slimmer and come in better sizes for my cabinets.

I used LEDs. They don't run hot and last for something ridiculous like 50000 hrs.

At the electrical store I go to, they warned me about them, which is why we didn't get them. I have flourescent too for that reason.

what do the fluorescents look like? does it give off the same light as a regular fluorescent light or is the color better?

I am getting led undercabinet lights for that reason. I can't give a review yet since mine are not installed though.
