Fusion of Old and New

Thanks to all the wonderful advice and tips that I have had from members on this forum! I think I am ready to call it a day on our Kitchen reno!! Unlike many of you here, we are not DIYers and had to enlist the help of some very unproffesional contractors. In the end, the kitchen came out the way I wanted it, but the process was VERY difficult. After being dwindled by two professional painters to remove wall paper, texture and paint our kitchen (as we had never done this before), we ended up learning how to do it, and the finished product had gotten quite a few compliments!! I am proud of that tiny part that we did ourself. Apart from that, I crafted the glass knobs for the cabinets to match the glass tiles on the backsplash and that has been a big hit too!
I planned a contemperory kitchen with modern lines and achieved the look. But I was unable to give up my collection of vintage pot n pans, potrack and my gradmother cookware. SO I incorporated them into modern kitchen- hence the fusion of Old and new!!
Finally, thanks to you all...here is my Finished kitchen.

Thank you all, for your kind words. I am still figuring out how to post it on the FK forum with all the details, until that happens, here is a list of things used in our remodel. Counter top - Granite, Volga blue, AKA Spectralite blue,Polare blue. A stone from Ukraine (from the river Volga) that has a black/greyish background with huge splothes of Spectralite crystals, that are blue and silver in diferent lights. It is difficult to get a good picture since the look changes with every shot! If someone is thingking about this stone and would want more pics, let me know and I will email a whole bunch, to help you make a choice. When I first started, I had only one or two kitchen which had used this stone, and not a lot of input in terms of pictures and backsplash ideas. I came up with my own and I a VERY HAPPY with it!! Backsplash- Himalayan white slate 4x4, mixed with glass 2x2 tiles from Daltile, Midnight and Daylight Shimmer. Sink - Zero raduis, 30X19, single bowl, 16 guage, undermount in brushed stainless finish Faucet - Giagni, pre rinse, spring faucet Blue barstools- Eurway Glass dining table and chairs- Eurway Island and pendant lights- Hunter lighting: Blue lagoon (mouthblown glass pendants with satin nickle trim) Appliances- Whirlpool gold, stainless (we changed them last year) Flooring (we kept old one) Honey Oak, light stain almost looks like blond maple. Cabinets- Light maple, from Aristokraft, we kept our existing ones as they were in excellent shape and were in the color of our choice. Cabinet knobs- I used the glass tiles from backsplash and glued (gorilla glue espcially marked for glass and metal) them to flat stainless knobs that I purchased at Lowes. Wall color- Sherwin William, I custom matched it to a color called Sterling Silver. We troweled on texture onto the stripped walls after priming with a oil based blocking primer, and then painted with two coats of paint. Artwork - "Friday Night in Soho" by Michael Brown, Giclee on canvas. Curtain - grommeted Panels in morning mist, BBB Kitchen Rugs- "Checkered" from Kohls Potrack, pot n pan - Collection from grandmother, mom and some new additions, made to look vintage! If I missed out somehting else, please let me know. Thanks again, mrao77 |

| I really really like your mix of old and new! I try to do that everywhere in my contemporary house. For example, above my pale birch DR hutch, which has the chilliest possible doors (Ikea's Avsikt, frosted glass with aluminum trim), I have several pieces of old Native American pottery. Your copper pots are fabulous to look at and I bet even better to cook in. Enjoy your lovely space. rc in VT |

| Hi, mrao77, your kitchen is beautiful! I find remodeling difficult, too, and the kitchen just seems to require so many different skills and trades. It's like you either shell out an inordinate amount of money or you have to stay on top of all the details to make things come together. I like your backsplash treatment with the mixture of glass and stone tiles. It is very unique. I also like how you decorated with the glass light fixtures and bar stools to pick up the blue in the granite and stainless steel appliances. The Volga blue countertops are gorgeous that must be a real treat to look at everyday. As for linking you Picassa Web album pictures, here are the rough steps: 1. Go to your Picasa Web photo album. 2. Make sure your album is set to be a "public" album. 3. On the right column, click "Link to this album." You can either link the entire album to posting or you can embed the picture in the text of your post. You can also decide the size of the pictures. 4. To link the entire album to the post, copy the path to your album into the "Optional Link URL" box and provide a name for the link. 5. To embed a particular picture, copy and paste the HTML text into the body of your message. Hope this helps and congratulations on your new kitchen! Good luck on posting those pictures! |
