Contrast is your friend in this situation. Nothing looks worse than an almost match.

A 2' tile border sounds like a lot. How happy are you about cleaning those off-white tiles with grout lines every 8" for the next several years? Will the old tile work with your new cabinets and counters or will the new stuff make the tile look really old? I've seen that happen.

Have you considered biting the bullet and tearing up the tile? You could extend the hardwood into the kitchen. I can't think of a way to make an area 2 x 10 look like anything but a major patch.

I would consider taking out the current tile and putting in new tile or add the current hardwood.

I agree about biting the bullet and extending the hardwood into the kitchen. I did that when we remodeled and now we have seamless hardwood in the whole downstairs that matches perfectly. I LOVE my wood floor. I am going to remodel the kitchen I inherited in Florida and although I have carpet in the rest of the apartment, I'm putting hardwood in the kitchen. It's warm, things don't break when they drop, and it is beautiful. By the way, the cost is no more than putting down a tile floor.
