| I just had Alabama White Marble subway tiles installed in my kitchen on the backsplash. The guy who installed did an okay job but he did leave some pitting in the grout and excess in some places. It's not horrible missing spots just just little pits here and there. And the excess is easily scraped off my my thumbnail. I think is due to wiping it too soon. Because he didn't do such a great job I wanted another opinion on the sealing...
I have a few question: 1. Will this grout install cause me problems in the future? Is there a simple solution to fixing it? 2. Should I seal both the marble and the grout or just the marble, or just the grout. I am more concerned about staining on the marble. So if i have to choose, I would seal the marble. 3. Does anyone have experience with this marble and what would be the best sealer. My tile guy said 511-miracle petroleum based. I hope to get some helpful answers, this is my first post. |

| 511 is good stuff - seal it all - after you clean it up and fill in the voids. |

| Seal it all. You just spray on the sealer, so no biggie. We had polished cararra. We didn't seal anything and then some milk splashed on the grout and seeped under/into the tile and we had a few spots. Removed most of it with a poultice and it wasn't very noticeable due to the nature of carrara. BUT then we sealed the grout. And have been sealing grout ever since! |

| antss- So does the 511 seal the grout and marble? Just want to clear up that I do or do not need two separate products. You also noted "after you clean it up and fill in the voids" How do I go about doing this? Can you just apply more grout and then wipe it off like you normally? sabjimata- what is poultice? Did you use that to clean up the grout or the marble? Thanks guys! this is my first post and I thrilled that I got good and fast responses. I am remodeling and think I will be here alot! This is a really cool resource. |

| I made a poultice like this: baking soda and ammonia rubbed into a paste onto a paper towel and left on the stained area. Drew out a lot of grease but burned the nasal passages. I reapplied a few times over a couple of days. It lightened the stain on the marble, drawing out the grease through the grout. Seriously, seal it all! Just do it. I have marble countertops and we sealed them. I get turmeric, oil, saffron, everything terrible on my counters and no stains. Welcome to the kitchen forum. It is a great place! |

| The same sealer seals the marble and grout. I believe Antss was telling you to fix the grout voids first, and apply the sealer to clean grout. If you try to repair the grout after sealing it will not adhere as well. The pits may become a breeding ground for dirt, so you might as well just do it now. Depending upon what is at stake, this could easily be a simple DIY with some matching grout, your finger, and a light wipe with a moist grout sponge. |

| nyc - has it correct. Clean and fill the install before 511 on everything. |

| So just to be clear is all I need to do is mix up a little grout to fill in the holes and seal it all up!? I was not aware that you can apply grout on top of previously installed grout. I was thinking you would need an adhesive, maybe I was confused with concrete... hmm |
