Do induction instead. All ranges period need ventilation, not just gas. No popup or downdraft works with a range. Overhead ventilation is required.

Induction cleans way way easier than an electric glass cooktop - because nothing gets "baked on".

Your local building codes will provide the answer as to whether a gas oven needs additional ventilation.

We did this. Our 1950s electric range had no ventilation above it (for ~75 years mind you since our house was built in 1939). We converted from oil to natural gas and are currently in the midst of a partial renovation which includes adding an above range hood for our new gas range. We don't have an upstairs so the ventilation is going through the roof. We lost some cabinet space. Didn't want a micro above it.

People love their induction cooktops but I am too primal apparently and IMHO it had certain limitations for me regarding canning, so gas was the winner in the end.
