Backsplash for rush kitchen remodel.

Hi all,

We have to rebuild the small L-shaped kitchen in our 'new' house due to surprises of the 'Money Pit' kind. Yay. I've never done this before, and I'm getting stuck. I have to decide on everything like yesterday.

The house is a 1950's cape and the kitchen will be separated by a peninsula from the casual den room which has hardwood floors.

We have chosen a two inch white hex tile for the kitchen floor which will be done with a grey grout.

We have chosen Lidingo white Ikea cabinets.

We have chosen a light white / grey stone countertop.

We are having a dark concrete farm-style sink custom made (the only thing my husband has shown interest in).

I'm getting stuck on the backsplash. I'm leaning towards a white or grey subway tile, but I fear that the kitchen will be too stark if I go that route. Any paint color I put on the wall will have to extend to the den.

Any ideas? I am not creative, I've finally figured out pinterest (!), and all the pictures I see look great to me but I'm having a hard time deciding.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks!
