Did you get the free 18 gauge sink? Is a sink grid worth $40?

I was just perusing the GTS website, looking at the first two sink packages, Ticor S112, and the only difference I can see is that the 2nd comes with a sink grid.

GTS

I haven't had a SS sink in a very long time and wonder if I should just take the free 18 gauge that comes with the granite? Any cons to it?

If that sink is the size you're looking for than I'd get it.
As for the grid, ours cost more than $40 but was well worth it.
I'm attaching a link to one of the many sink grid threads here on GW.

Thanks willtv. I've never had a grid and never wanted one. What I really want is a cutting board that fits into the sink cutout and sits on top of the SS sink edge. I gave my glass Corning cutting board to my dd, and it sits perfectly in her cutout. Her sink, I think, is the sink that came with her granite. That cutting board is much bigger than the one pictured in the link I posted, and nothing falls off while cutting. I fear that the one pictured is too small to really be useful.

If you want a cutting board that will sit on top of the sink ledge, then you're probably best off having your countertop fabricator create a positive reveal of about 1/4" and then fabricate a cutting board of your choosing to fit.
There are sinks that come with pre-fitted cutting boards but they're usually very expensive.
As for the grid, I never had one before.
But having lived with it for the last 20 months, I'd never go without one again.

Hi Marti--I have a large Franke sink( I think it's large at 30.5"W but others have 36" sinks-wow) w/ a pull out sprayer faucet. I really like the grid b/c you can drain washed items on it . I will not have a dish drain on top of the counter. The sink grid is very substantial, I think it cost about $90. Also since the sink is deep it raises everything up a bit. The specialty cutting boards sold with sinks are $$$, you can have someone make one for you...I didn't get the cutting board to fit th sink since I want a "flush" cutout and I love cutting boards of all sizes & thicknesses. It doesn't bother me to have them out in the open. The dish drain is another story..

At first I really didn't like the sink grid but now I am getting used to it and sort of like it now. It does protect the bottom of my pretty new sink.

I must be a clutz. Have the fitted cutting board which came with my sink. Am forever turning the water on and of course it is right over the board, flooding the counter top.

Am getting a new single bowl 36". And I want a sink grid after reading so much from all of you as to the value.

Are they easy to clean and do you clean after each use? How long to they look new and clean? I've seen some in kitchens that look like one would be crazy to put anything in there. The gray or tan tint which looks like it will never come off. Perhaps the new expensive ones are easier to take care of. Or the dirty ones just need to be replaced.

technicolor
I could picture myself turning on the water on top of the cutting board too. It's a good thing I didn't get it.:)
The (heftiness)grids vary by manufacturer. I've seen some that were way too flimsy.Mine came with a note that stated no hot pots, abrasive chemicals or abrasive sponges etc. should touch the grid or the vinyl coating would melt/wear away. Also long exposure to tea/coffee will discolor it. If a utensil falls underneath it's easy to pull out. I think some grids may have spaces that are too small so the fork's tines get caught there. They're easy to clean just wipe down w/ a soapy sponge and rinse thoroughly. Also I don't sit my cast iron on top of the grid, that definitely would discolor it.

I suspected coffee could be a stain problem. Can you use a spray bleach formula on them? For utensils I always put them in a bowl with soapy water until getting to the DW. Old habit, but visitors don't know this. It's the falling into the GB that I don't want to go through.

Hadn't thought about hot pots/pans. They do go in the sink right after cooking to utilize hot water immediately for easier cleaning of cooked food. I can still do this by putting them on the counter next to sink.

Thank You

I have the 70/30 Ticor S405D with sink grids, basket strainer and standard strainer. I bought it from overstock and left the rim polished. I love the sink grids, and the basket strainer that came with it It is a little SS basket that sits down in the drain kinda neat to have, I had not seen one like it before. I use the basket strainer in my small side sink.

My granite place used Artisan brand stainless steel 60/40 or 50/50 for $275.00, it was more money and smaller and did not come with sink grids or strainers.

I might of had a hard time convincing DH to buy the sink if the artisan one had been free. I do not think you would regret the ticor with grids.

My sink came free with my granite but I had to buy the strainers (no grids included). I'm happy with it (of course, I had the cheap, shallow, builder grade sink before so anything seems better)!

At first I wasn't sure I liked my grid. It seemed I spent a lot of time chasing bits of food down the drain that would have been easy to just direct with my hand. The idea of gunk on the underside bothered me.

Now I like it. I don't care if my SS sink gets scratches. In fact, the little feet of my grid have made tiny little scratches. What I like the best, and which others also mention, is the grid gives you a relatively flat surface above the bottom of the sink, on top of which you can set things to dry while the water sloshes down below. I often dry things there and the criss-cross makes it easy to stack many cookie trays on end.

As for cleaning, I do this once a week: Take my grid out of the sink and give my sink and good scrub with Ajax (or the cleanser of your choice). Then I put the grid in upside down and scrub with Ajax, flip over and scrub the other side. Then spray rinse. Takes me maybe 5 minutes.

I got a positive reveal on my sink, never knowing that the right size cutting board will sit there. I never do that, because I too would forget and turn on the water full blast and wet myself.

You have all talked me into getting a sink with a grid. I am going to get a cutting board too, but I don't like things out so I probably won't put it on the sink unless I'm using it.
