Glass shelves from where?

Posted by CEFreeman (My Page) on

Hi all!

I am planning to put glass shelves in the credenza I'm building.

I keep hearing and reading that you "just have them cut".

But where? Mine will need to span 24 and 27" cabinets. So they need to be a little thicker. I'd like a finished edge.

So, if I want this, (and I save to get it) where should I go?
HD? Lowe's? or mystery place I haven't figured out.

Thanks!

I've used the glass and mirror shop in my town. A guy came out and measured the cabinet that needed shelving. He brought out the glass and "installed" it for me. They were able to do a reinforced glass with a polished edge.

My HD and Lowes do not offer glass services.

We have two long-established glass companies in the nearest (just a few miles away) small town. I have taken salvaged glass in to have it cut for different projects. The latest was to have some glass louvers salvaged from a big old porch window cut down for a display shelf. One company is more reasonable and willing to do small projects than the other. Google the nearest town and ''glass''. Bet something comes up. Best to go in and talk to them.

Glass and mirror dealer, silly! Almost every city has at least one. Yellow Pages under 'Glass'.

Remember to get the edges ground for safety.

I know there are a billion of 'em in your area, and they will all have hokey but endearing web sites like this:

Here is a link that might be useful: Jet glass & mirror, MD/DC

with hokey and endearing little jobs performed at locales like this:
Photobucket

Thanks for the url !

Not sure where you are, but here in LA there is a marked price difference according to ethnicity of glass cutter. I don't know how or if skill level tracks price.

Don't forget that glass shelves should be safety glass so that if dropped, you won't have a spurting artery.

tempered.1/4 or 3/8". Pencil edge.

I got glass for my cabinet and a new windshield at the same time, same place once. A shower door store. They're out there!

Yep, in my area by far the best work for frameless shower enclosures comes from a place that advertises only as an auto glass store. But most glass places do all kinds of work, including shelves, very reasonably.

RE: Glass shelves from where?

No kidding! Who knew.
I've never had to shop for this, so I didn't know where to start. Believe it or not, the windshield people did come to mind, but I thought that would be silly. Who is silly now!

Thanks all.
I'm going to look around down here no no man's land.

Even our ReStore, which has up-to-date items like every color cultured marble vanity known to man, has lots of glass shelves hanging around. The caveat is whether or not they're tempered which is probably not worth the risk unless they're actually marked or something.

Also, check out Ikea. The Rationell Glass Shelf is tempered and comes in several sizes and is $16 per two-pack for the 24x12 cab size. The actual shelf dimension for this size cab are listed as Width: 22 3/8 " Depth: 11 1/2 " Thickness: 1/4 ". Miraculously, you can even buy these online and have them shipped to you! Now, the unbreakable little stainless steel jars that I want for my bathroom? Nah, *those* they don't ship...

Anyway, perhaps standard/European sizes are not good options for your custom furniture though.

good luck!

Oh! Excellent idea, mtnfever.

Do you have an Ikea near you? I do. If you don't and want those things, I'll get 'em and send 'em. Takes me a while to get to the post office, but it'd be easier than trying to drive to the next state.

I'll check them out for the shelves, too.
My restore place has a lot of glass, too. I haven't taken my measurements down there, but will Friday.

Thank you for the kind offer, Christine! I'm just making a wish list (half the fun, like looking through Sears & Roebuck when I was a kid) and will pick up non-shippable items on our annual May trip through Denver but if they somehow unimaginably close that Ikea, I might take you up on that offer.

good luck with the glass! of course, pics will be required of your credenza...

Yep - what others have said - glass and mirror places. I had to have glass shelves redone for a bathroom cabinet as they were all chipped for some reason, but they were also done on an angle and I just took one of them with me and they cut to match - they were perfect.

You want a place that does repairs/installs and not just a retail place.

We used Dulles Glass to cut some mirrors for our medicine cabs that my dad built. They also cut glass. They do a great job. They will quote online, and ship, so you don't have to go out to VA.

The clearest glass is starphire glass. It is available in either tempered or non-tempered.

Thanks again, guys!

Tempered glass often has a logo on it, small and subtle, unless you specifically request no logo. So look for the mark if you are shopping at a ReStore or whatnot and assume it's not tempered if the mark is missing.

Didn't know that, marcolo.
Thanks.
