White cottage kitchen - light above sink help please

Hello all. Still deciding on a countertop after a snafu regarding the granite but in the meantime DH begged me to get a light since I want to place one above the sink and he wants to install it before we have a countertop which really is the last thing before I get back to having a working kitchen. I am really thinking about getting some wood boards from Ikea and DIY and worry about the granite later since I am quite weary of not having a working kitchen but this post is about help for light.

I have a tiny kitchen, 110x101, in a small cape cod cottage and we did white painted maple cabs, refinished the original 1940 pine floor we found under layers of other materials, fixed up the plaster walls which were then painted sage green (although they look light in this picture), moved the window to accomodate a corner cab, added a range hood vented to the outside, intalled a toe kick heater and added a DW to the mix.

I am interested in a schoohouse style light for above the sink but am open to suggestions. No u/c lighting has been decided on yet but DH left wiring in the wall for it and a dimmer switch is available should I pursue that. In the meantime, I do have two battery operated lights that I saved from the apartment days to use for u/c lights that would require 2 screws and be done but since I have yet to do any cooking or work in the kitchen yet, they are sitting in the drawer. We have a white ceiling fan in the center of the ceiling which must be kept as we do not have a/c and I need light to see. It's such a small room that I don't think those round lights in the ceiling are necessary and the vent hood has dimmable lights in it too.

I wanted to do a schoolhouse pendant with a glass globe that the bulb is enclosed in . . . I really don't like looking directly at a light bulb without any sort of shade but does the globe cut down on the light or just soften it? My other concern is should I get a semi-flush or small pendant to hang down in front of the window? That curtain is temp for now but I plan on adding a wood blind for privacy since we are on top of our neighbors as well as a valance when I find some fabric I like. I don't want it to look like a bath fixture.

What do you think? Semi-flush or pendant? Keep with shiny chrome? I do love wrought iron although there is no black in this room, I do have a lot of wrought iron throughout the house and was also considering a tiffany style pendant light for some color but I will be adding a floral area rug to cover the gouge we put in the newly refinished floor when adding back the FR . . I have a shiny chrome bridge faucet and chrome hardware. Eventually I hope to get some nice glass knobs . . I did purchase the decagon style knobs with the chrome bolt through the center but they looked really cheap and small against the cabs so I went to Ebay and got some $1 knobs for know.

As always, thank you for your comments and help.

Something wall-mount might be nice rather than a ceiling mount?

Have you looked at Rejuvenation?

Here is a link that might be useful: Rejuvenation Gallery

Deedles, how nice and not bath-like at all...

Biochem, I hadn't and thanks for the link. There are some really nice choices here.

I think a wall mount would look great. It would keep the ceiling from looking crowded due to the fan and give really good light. I love mine. I can't remember which on-line place I got it but I can look it up next week when I get home if you need me to.

Thanks trailrunner. . . I see your point of how the wall mount would look better. Thanks!

I see a black cat! He's not leaving is he? So you can do black.

I think you can do almost anything you're considering which is why it's such a hard decision.

And I think the curtain is actually adorably perfect in there!

Really pretty kitchen - you've made some lovely choices. It almost doesn't matter what light you choose for over the sink if you don't change the ceiling fan - you won't see it anyway. I would opt for a vintage schoolhouse ceiling fan like the one below, but with white or black blades. Then I'd go for a schoolhouse pendant over the sink (next post).

The shade does soften the light, and does make it a little less bright, but that's the thing - if it's going to be less harsh, it's going to be a little less bright. Still plenty of light to work with. Instead of wood blinds that can be bulky, consider shutters (one lower, and a small upper that you can leave open if you want) that fit into the window frame.

I am also looking for an over the sink light and was thinking schoolhouse style for a while. In my case I must do a wall light and I could not find a schoolhouse style wall light that did not look like it belonged in the bathroom IMHO. Definitely go to Schoolhouse electric and Rejuvenation websites for ideas and to see if you concur.
Regarding your point about the enclosed light bulb, the globe will soften and diffuse the light. I originally had this as a requirement too, though I have relaxed it as long as I end up with a shade that pretty much covers the bulb from all sides. After all how often will I look straight up into the bottom of the fixture.
I do love something like the schoolhouse pendant EAM posted for your space.

This is the light we have over our sink in our smallish cottage kitchen.

From Rejuvenation:

Light over sink by Rejuvenation

I believe ours has the 8" shade.

I think a wall light like trailrunner's would look great. I can also see where on the wall would be better than ceiling also w/the fan/light.

The curtain you have up is darling. I'd keep it there.

I like that your fan has separate lights aimed in different directions. that'll help spread the light around your room. The globes for those can be changed out for a few dollars each. Lowe's has them for 10.00 or so- some are etched so they allow more light thru the globe area. They remind me of old style globes.

Love the lace curtain and I think a little fancy glass pendant would look great.

Fori, yes, the cat towel holder is staying . . thanks for the reminder! I totally forgot about that being black. Lots of votes for the lace curtain . . if I keep it, I have to hem that curtain!

EAM44, thank you! I do like the suggestion of switching out the fan for a schoolhouse globe style and I love that pendand choice. DH said he can try to put the light on the wall provided there is no stud dead center but if I do put it in the ceiling, I was worried about it being too much and it being too close together. I do love the shutter idea and that may work. I considered those for my living room as we live right on top of our neighbors; however, the cats like to look out the window. The kitchen window is the only window they can't get too (well in a perfect world . . . )

Localeater, my sentiments exactly. I have this concern that I don't want it to look like a bath fixture but there are so many pretty lights to choose from. True, how often do you look straight up but I am tall and there are cabs on either side of the sink that I will access on a regular basis. It's almost a shame for the ceiling fan but we definitely need it.

Shelayne, what a pretty fixture! Is the 8 inches the length/height (up and down) of the shade or the width (left to right)?

Desertsteph, I'm so wrapped up in the countertop selection that I totally forgot I could change the shades on the fan and I think I will! Thanks.

Annie, ooh! Very pretty! Thanks for the picture!

We have way too many choices!

I was so excited to see someone else with a small kitchen. I am to redoing my space with white cabinets.I saw that your dishwasher looks compact.I have thought of replacing my full size for a smaller one. My concern was how often would i need to do dihes. So i am opting for a 24 inch wide 72 inch tall fridge. What size fridge do you have? This is the one i believe we are choosinghttp://www.steecos.com/Summit_FFBF285SSIM.html

RE: White cottage kitchen - light above sink help please

Hi Jennybog. We are a household of 2 who entertain only in small groups and not that often. We had no dw and I really wanted to add one. I have a 24 inch 4 drawer base on the other side of the L next to the stove. I thought about putting the dw there but the 24 seemed so large and I really wanted it next to the sink so I opted for the 18. We found this one on clearance for $129 down from $579 because it was white, small and out of the box. I really wanted the more expensive one that could have a panel front but dh who is against a dw said let's start with this. He does do most of the dishes as I am the cook. So to get the dw in, we went with a 24 fr. I got the Lg which is about 68 inches tall. As you can see we left room so we could go taller. The freezer section is fantastic but I am still getting used to the fridge part. I think if I had maybe 1 more shelf but overall we are happy with it. The lg was only about $500 and again like the dw before we committed $1,500 for a narrow fridge we thought we would start with this. We live in a busy metro area so it is not rural where one may do a large shopping 2x a month. So far we are pleased. I would have started with the Summit but I could not find one on display. We downsized from a 33 by 33 and the CD LG is so nice in our small space.. Good luck to you!

I second Schoolhouse Electric!

I would do an enclosed schoolhouse pendant from Rejuvenation or Schoolhouse. I, too, needed something closed.
You can basically build your own light at Rejuvenation and just make sure the globe part isn't overwhelmingly huge!
(also, on a more cost-effective note...Lowe's has been getting many cool "vintage-inspired" lights in--worth a look?)

Thank you Sara. I usually shop at HD because the Lowe's by me never has any help but I am going to check it. Yes, Rej and School has some great stuff but at a price and I think this is something I may want to see in person before I order.
