| Okay, so I am a Computer Engineer. Paid to think. But since I've started this mission to remodel my kitchen, I swear I've lost my senses.
The ladies in the tile store know me by my first name and they wait on others before me because they think I am just browsing again. If this store was a bar, I'd be an alcoholic. Today I placed an online order for my tile floor. Yep, I carefully decided the color I wanted and ordered it. Done. But a few hours later, I started to second guess myself. "The color in the kitchen is a cool gray but the open family room has a warm, stone fireplace." Wait, do I want gray or light tan? Tan/gray/tan/gray. Call the guy and change the oder to tan!!! I keep asking my poor color-blind DH which subtle shade he likes better. When I come into the room with samples, he looks at me like he want to be the invisible man. Dozens of trips to stone store, tile stores, paint stores....my head is spinning!!! Please tell me I'm not alone. |
Follow-Up Postings:

| It does. It is too late to do anything about it. Drinking can mask the effects. |

| You are not alone. After the cabinets were installed, I started thinking out loud "what if...", "I wonder if...", "could we have done..." and I thought DH was going to have a fit! He asked months ago how long being TKO lasted. There are so many options, so many choices. It is impossible to investigate and explore and find the pros and cons of all the possible singles and combinations. Trust your gut feelings and you will be all right. |
| Take a deep breath, now take another one... You're not alone. I too changed my mind so many times and second guessed myself on every little detail BUT BUT BUT there is hope. My remodel came together beautifully and I truly believe yours will too if you care enough to change your mind enough! I went to several tile places and finally find one, Crossville (?) porcelain tile, 4x8 inch, gloss finish, solid color (8 days a week). Immediately after the tile came in, I questioned the high gloss. I was so upset over it that I almost reordered the same tile in matte. (keep in mind, my original tile order was non-refundable!). I changed my mind over 10 times when considering the granite choice (I also considered quartz and Formica). I questioned my paint color for my cabinets over and over. I questioned my stainless faucet right after I placed the order. I later thought, I should have ordered the ORB one but now I'm so happy I didnt. I questioned the appliances I bought. I got 8 granite quotes before choosing a company. I went to 6 different appliance companies before buying. I changed my mind 3 times on the sink (50/50 or 60/40). After it's all said and done, I'm happy with the outcome. Looking back, even if I would have picked a couple of different finishes or items, I still think it would look great. I'm one of those people that is never 100% sure about anything so get money involved and I'm really going to question things. Maybe youre the same :) Good Luck!!!! |

| Cabinetmaker at Dutch Wood knows all the GW'ers by first name. You can call him up and just say this is ________ and he knows. No last names needed. We have driven him to the edge I'm afraid. We certainly have broken him in. And until I had my own set of BM Fandecks, they knew me very well at the Benjamin Moore store. It was a big day for me the day I got my own fandecks. And yes, marcolo is right, an adult beverage or five a night will help ease the pain. THis is why it is imperative to get the beverage fridge hooked up early to test it. : ) |

| Yes, it makes you completely nuts. And yes, drinking helps the pain. |
| You are not alone. The granite yard knew me, the lighting store, the tile store (a decision I finally left to the KD), the flooring store, the appliance store (who offered me a job when we were finally done), the faucet/sink/toilet store (Yea, we did a whole house reno), etc. But you know what, they were all the kindest, most helpful people with great suggestions and ideas - at least to my face - who knows what they said behind my back. And changing my mind about things - lets start with the probably 50 floorplans for the kitchen, the back-and-forth about appliances, lights, colour of the hardwood (oh c*** is there pink in this one?) etc. Good Luck. and if you need to vent you know where we are. |
| You are not alone- I've done some (more than usual) hair-brained things over the past two months. The worst of which was leaving a glass in the in-door water dispenser of the fridge while I went to wipe up something on the counter. We had a minor flood. I left the room and completely forgot about it. Thankfully the fridge must shut that down after a time, but it's more than it takes to get a glassful of water. Wine helps. Our recycling guys must think we have a drinking problem (or lots of houseguests) lately. |

| In a word....yes. Yes it does make you lose your mind. Don't even think about attempting a whole house reno without an insane asylum nearby. I should have lined up my reservations in advance. Then, at the very end of a crazy, wacky, ready-to-kill-someone year, we finally moved back in the house with the booze and the corkscrew in an unknown box randomly placed by my DH in the 3-high, 8-deep pile in the LR. Always, I repeat, always, keep track of the corkscrew. Alternatively, stock up on screw top wine and keep it in your car so you always know where it is. Only half kidding. It WILL get better and you'll be glad with the finished project. |
| You guys make me feel better. I'm a redhead and my husband has started calling me Lucy (I Love Lucy) lately. Some of my actions lately do remind me of something she might do. I think I'll have another vita-veeta-vega-min now! (Burp). |

| Yup! And it not only affects kitchen-related brain processes. I completely lost (for three months) some important forms for DS2's school. The school finally emailed to ask about them, and were very nice and understanding when I explained the commotion in my house and in my brain! |
| I am in the planning phase. Good thing is that I live in a small city, so there aren't too many choices. I also want to stay under 25k budget, so that eliminates a bunch of choices right away. Upgrades are always better, the hard part is deciding if its worth the extra dollars. |
| In addition, I got my mind made up on cabinets and the KD came to do a round of final measurements before placing the order and find out that I have weird ceiling height and needed 33" cabinets. Back to the start :( |
| Ohhh, I feel your pain! I haven't had a full night's sleep since we decided to renovate the kitchen of the house we are in the process of buying. The present owners are so kind to allow us to go in to measure and remeasure, take contractors in, etc. We've been there at least 15 times and we don't take possession for another 3 weeks. I wake up in the night and think, I should move... this way a bit. I should make that wall 1' longer so that..., maybe we should... I'm still in the layout stage. I have the cabinet maker booked, in the process of choosing counter, am second guessing everything I've decided on. I do think I'm losing my mind! Aaaghh!!! |
| AND that doesn't count the hundreds of hours I have spent on here checking out all of the ideas and pictures of all of the great ideas on here! |

| before TKO: maybe one or two glasses of wine a week. Durng TKO- daily intake of grape antioxidant. helps dull the crazy. You are not alone...turns perfectly intelligent, deep-thinking humans into people who spend long hours deeply engrossed in researching the best paper towel holders. Just go with the flow and remember to laugh at yourself. And say "cheers"!! |
| Yes, yes! Waking up with granite names and cabinet configurations spinning around in your head! I'm familiar with that. My cabinetmaker was Mennonite. This was fortunate because their religion teaches them to accept difficulties and hardship with acceptance and fortitude. When I called about a week before he was due to start construction and asked him to change a couple cabs (again) and add a trash pullout and a paper towel cubby, he just said OK. But he may still have thought I was nuts. My family thinks I must be out of my mind, because we finished almost a year ago and here I am, on the computer reading and writing about kitchens. |

| Oh my dear lord, it does. It absolutely does. We are pre-renovation still, and our only solid decision at this point is our granite. And I look at the little piece that the fabricator broke off for us and I stare at it and start obsessing over the fact that I see a lot more yellow undertones in it that I first thought. (Was I drinking when we picked it???) And I worry. A lot. Like, a crazy about of a lot. This kitchen is a huge investment for us. And quite honestly, we are, in one swift swoop, overimproving the house beyond the amount we could sell it for. I am spending COUNTLESS hours right now researching and debating the relative benefits of tape LED UC lighting vs. bar LED UC lighting. And then obsessing about will those little diodes reflecting back drive me to drink (more!) and will the individual lights really reflect individually on the aforementioned granite, which is leathered and not shiny. And no one, bar those of you on GW, really truly understand this pain. Just today, I was reviewing a kitchen layout in a house that we almost built a few years back, and was counting my lucky stars that we didn't wind up with that (disfunctional) kitchen that at the time I believed would have been fantastic. I am forever ruined. And I hope that none of my friends ask me a simple question about their kitchen remodel, because it would surely turn into hours of discussion or until their eyes glazed over and ran away screaming. So, yes, welcome to the club. Pour a glass of your favorite beverage or wine, or a few glasses, or a bottle...no judgement here on that...we'll all get through our remodels and builds. And on here, we all understand that special pain. |
| AAAAAAaaahahahahahahhahahahahaha. Seriously though. My DH hears the sound of the tape measure being extended for, oh, probably the 80 millionth time and says "do you think it's any different today?" It's nuts, I'm nuts and you are probably nuts, too. Enjoy!

| Yes, it does... Seriously can be completely overwhelming to the point you can't make a decision on anything. But... it will get done and you will love all of the effort made. Every decision you agonized over will be worth the lost sleep and anxious feelings. |

| OMG- I am seriously laughing reading this all again. deedles- The tape measure never ends! When we were doing our floor plan every night I would stare at it and stare at it and sit there with the scale ruler and my dh would say, "What can you possibly be looking at again?" Then choosing a yellow for my cabs... that has been going on since before Christmas and I Just picked one last week! The hours I poured over those colors- painting them everywhere. I ACTUALLY LAUGHED IN HYSTERICS OUT LOUD AS I LOOKED AT YET ANOTHER WRONG YELLOW. I also talked out lout to myself (not something I EVER do) to convince myself yet another yellow was just not right! I try to put on the front that I'm normal in front of gc, store owners, etc. but I think it's too far gone. They are onto me! |

| you are definately not alone. selections of certain products took me months, with lots of back and forth. take your time, live with your choices and don't rush it( be sure to get samples and view in the space!). the design process is iterative and IMHO cannot be rushed. the good news - it will be done and you will love it. i could not be happier with my kitchen - it makes me smile every day. |

| i actually think i am gaining weight b/c I am CONSTANTLY looking and checking on line (sitting and sitting in front of my desk top!!!) and second guessing decisions i've made. I made my early bird son very happy two weeks ago b/c i was up at 5 in the a.m. he could not believe his mamma who requires rousing at 10:30 in the summer months was up so early. WHY? Because I was PANICKING over my soapstone choice. It is rather calming to know that i am NOT the only one... lol.. far from it, it seems :-) |
| Mind? What mind. I don't mind.... |
| It's the second guessing myself that is making me lose my mind. Dh said he is done, I have to pick the granite myself. But what if I pick wrong? It keeps me up at night. Like right now. |
| I'm so glad to hear I'm not alone in this. In the next two weeks my cabinets, appliances, sinks, and countertops will be installed. Shortly after it will be the floor and backsplash. I feel like all these items have been thrown into a bag, a little bit of this, a little bit of that. I just hope when they are all put together they actually look good! Fortunately my DH's hobby is collecting wine and is generous with his pours. |
| I think you may have it the wrong way around: Clearly, one first loses one's mind, and that causes him or her to undertake a kitchen renovation. The kitchen renovation, then, just causes one to lose his or her wallet! ;-) |
| I'm an engineer, too, so maybe we think alike. I took out soooo many tile boards over many months (for my new build). I stayed up late into the night staring at them all. I finally had it all figured out and had it priced. Then I went in the next day and changed them all. Some of the tiles I ended up getting I never brought home and my husband never saw them. There was a lot of flip-flopping between gray and tan as I recall. I still look at some choices and try to remember why I chose them, but I like them all. And my husband loves the master bath tile he never saw samples of (probably because I never made him stare at the samples!) |
| re: "My DH hears the sound of the tape measure being extended for, oh, probably the 80 millionth time and says "do you think it's any different today?" Ah, ha, ha, ha, ha!!! This is SO ME! Isn't insanity defined as "continuing to repeat the same thing over and over expecting different results" ? We TRULY have lost it! |
| Funnily, I'm beyond that stage, briefly. But someone asked for my island's measurement so I broke out the tape measure and just marveled at the pavolian response its sound created: *cringe*! I hadn't realized its 'shzip' sound was so iconic ... or anxiety-inducing. |
| The simple answer is yes. It actually feels like my head wants to explode! |

| "I CONTINUED to measure! Just in case I measured wrong, or didn't take into account the crookedness of the walls, or the thickness of the mouldings, etc, etc... Isn't insanity defined as "continuing to repeat the same thing over and over expecting different results" ? " oh dear. I do that. measure and re-measure. I think I'm ok tho because I always get a different number - even if it IS the same wall or floor! |
| Potential GC out for a bid meeting starts to measure an opening in the kitchen...I look at him and say, "That one is 43 3/16th" without the baseboard." He looks at me like I am crazy. Maybe that's also why we had a "who's on first" discussion about the number of drawer stacks in the plan. *sigh* |

| So glad we're all in this together <3 I have recently retained the architect and am already anxious because there are soooo many decisions to be made and alot of money to be spent. That is why we angst. We do not want to go thru the process and end up with something we aren't sure about or don't really like. So. . . here's to the corkscrew!! Whooo hooo. And I did have a small glimpse of what I am in for the other day as I decided that I want "white or cream" colored cabinets. I thought well this won't be too difficult - UNTIL I looked at 12 different colors of each. OMG, I kept saying this is it, no this one is better...no maybe...??? I write this on just about every post I write, but I am forever thankful for ALL of you; beeps, babuska, katieob, jbrodie, 2LittleFishies, deedles, breezygirl, Angie, blflenton...etc. etc. You are my inspiration!!! |
| Oh, GEEZ......yes!! How many times did I measure my island, write it down, THEN some wood worker fabricator appliance person would ask me what the dimensions were... I started spelling it dementia-ns!!! I could NOT remember! Nacy |
| Yes. I'm comforted by the others who measured so much that they memorized the numbers. Sometimes I would ask if contractors if they were sure they had measured correctly, especially when they were off from my own numbers. I used to measure, re-measure, re-remeasure, and re-re-measure. My best friend would call me up and ask if she'd interrupted my measuring. At random times of the day I would suddenly have new ideas on layouts, and I'd HAVE to draw, re-draw, and re-re draw everything. I would sit in meetings at work and calculate the possible cabinet dimensions or work up budget figures. Luckilly I work with numbers and financials so no one realized I wasn't taking notes at the meeting, I had graph paper and tracing paper, samples, etc. I visited dozens of showrooms and had 2-3 contingency plans for every decision. Guess what, it all paid off in the end and I love the result. |
