Neither of these examples are contemporary. Jack Arnold has a black island in his home, along with two colors of painted cabinets (not visible) but one hutch (left) is wood.

I have a black hutch, a pine hutch, French Gray island (pine pieces and island with black based glaze) and cream painted cabinets (with brown based glaze). I started out wanting a black island, but decided on the color when I saw the paint.
