we're installing white shaker cabs and counters using black soapstone with distinct white veining and have medium light wood floors. i had planned on installing the white subway tiles horizontally (typical pattern) but am considering a herringbone (zig zag pattern) for the backsplash. FYI, we'll use a slab of soapstone for behind the cooktop but the rest of the backsplash will be the subway tile. also, there's not a huge amount of backsplash - sections get broken up by things like the window, fridge, wall ovens, and built in china cabinet. is herringbone too busy?
