Glass2

Has anyone had any experience with Glass2? I am looking at it as a possible backsplash, as the single piece of glass seems like it would be both attractive and easy maintenance. If you have used this, how do you like it? And, even if you haven't had personal expereince with it, how do you think it would look in my kitchen, based on the following information?

I have golden oak cabinets (nicer than builder grade) with laminate counters. We are slowly, piece-by-piece, giving the kitchen a facelift. We just finished putting new floors in the main floor of our home, so it will be a while before we have the funds to move on to doing more in the kitchen. I like to use this time to plan and debate various finishes.

First, the oak cabinets will stay. The layout works, and the cabinets are in good condition. Oak would not be my favorite choice for cabinets (unless quarter sawn or rift), but DH loves oak and I don't want to spend money on new cabinets when the ones we have still work well.

I do want to replace the counter tops, and I am strongly leaning toward black/dark gray. I'd love to get granite or quartz, mostly so I can put in an undermount SS sink. Frankly, I cook a lot and spend a lot of time in my kitchen and I think laminate counters have been great, but I really, really want an undermount sink. In the end, though, I may have to compromise with a laminate. (Resale is also a factor to consider, as we may be downsizing in the next 5-10 years---but if we put the work and money into a kitchen, I want something that I will enjoy for those 5-10 years.) Appliances will be gradually replaced over time and will remain white.

I guess if I had to describe our home, I would say it's transitional. It does have some traditional features, in terms of the oak bannister, oak kitchen cabinets, and dark cherry dining room table and chairs, but my decorating is somewhat eclectic---gradually becoming more clean lines without frills (somewhat contemporary, but with a bit more softness, if that makes sense?).

A bit more info---we have medium gray LVT in our kitchen, and I had initially envisioned putting in a dark gray/black quartz counter top and marble tile backsplash. DH objects to the marble tile because of maintenance issues---he doesn't care for tile backsplash because of the grout and likes the idea of marble even less due to the added concern for maintenance. I'm thinking the Glass2 might work well for us, but I am concerned that it might be too contemporary. With the right choice of counter top, do you think this could work? I realize that, ultimately, I have to choose what I think will work best for us, but I'd appreciate any input.

RE: Glass2

Do you have a picture of your kitchen cabinets that you could post here? I think that would help to see the color, door style, etc.

That Glass2 is pretty nifty stuff. Marcolo posted a link on another thread and I checked it out yesterday. Can't imagine it to be anything but pricey, though fwiw.

Anyway, a pic would be great and helpful....

And which color of glass2 were you thinking about with the dark counters?

RE: Glass2

Sorry, I don't have a camera to take pictures. (Last camera was run over on an airport runway and still haven't replaced it.) I'll try to find a picture that is similar and post it here.

We have khaki walls in the kitchen/family room, although once the backsplash goes up, there won't be much of the khaki visible. I am thinking of painting the few wall surfaces in the kitchen gray, but will have to see my other selections before committing to that. Our floors are LVT, in a gray color. I'm posting a link to that--it's the Downs Parish #395 (Tribune). This is one case where I think the product looks better in person than on screen.

I thought I would like the Ash White in the Glass 2 with black quartz or granite. I was going to post a link to this, too, but I don't know how to add more than one link to a post. So here's the URL ...

http://www.glass2.com/products.asp

At this point, I could do a complete 180 and go in a different direction, since I'm just starting to plan, so I'm open to other suggestions. It all hinges, I think, on what I choose for the counter top. I still love the idea of a marble, or marble-like tile, but DH isn't thrilled with the idea, so I'm trying to find something that will please us both. I'm thinking a darker countertop would look better with my cabinets, and that is what I always seem to be drawn to, although I do have concerns about it showing everything.

I'm also concerned about the Glass2 being too expensive. I really need to go look at it and possible counter tops so that I can rule in or out certain ideas. It's just hard to physically go look, as I have a multiply handicapped child who is with me 24/7 and finds it difficult to go into new places.

Here is a link that might be useful: Downs Parish #395 LVT

RE: Glass2

I wanted back painted glass for my kitchen - but way too pricey for my budget...
And in the end, the glass just didn't talk to the rest of the kitchen, so my countertops, floor, and cabinets out voted me!

Listen to your kitchen - it does talk! (OK, just kidding but have to have some fun!)

Does your phone have a camera? It doesn't have to be a super resolution to submit from a phone.

Taking care of a child with a disability is a challenge. You have a lot of work ahead.

RE: Glass2

Ooo. That floor is pretty! With golden oak cabs and a black counter. Like that. Not feeling the white glass backsplash, though in lieu of a counter choice at present.
Seems that the golden oak has a warmth that black and white cntr/bkspl doesn't work with. Too modern? I'll search for pics whilst I sit here waiting for someone to get home...

RE: Glass2

Ooh, how exciting to get back and find some responses. I was afraid that the glass wouldn't work in my kitchen, but it is such a cool product! And it would satisfy my DH's strong desire for no grout lines. OTOH, it's probably pretty expensive, which could make it prohibitive. I still want to go see it in person someday. I was also thinking about finding something in really large subway size, which would at least minimize the grout lines and maybe satisfy DH.

I looked around online, and I believe you would call my cabinets raised panel. They have a medium oak stain, which, unfortunately has yellowed a little over the years. I do have a really old cell phone with the ability to take a very bad photo, but no way to send the photo anywhere. I'll keep looking around to see what I can do.

RE: Glass2

Okay, here's a oak kitchen with black counters and a white painted backsplash. Put your
cool floor in there and the glass backsplash, and yes, it looks nice. Love to find out how much that stuff costs. Maybe you can send for a sample... is there anything for requesting samples on their website... or email them and ask?

RE: Glass2

The photo is pretty dark on my monitor, can't really see too well. We don't have any railing or other extra trim around the cabinets or over the window, and I believe my cabinets are lighter than these, but hard to say.

For whatever reason, I am always drawn to the darker counter tops. I think it works well with the oak, based on quartz samples I've gotten. For budget reasons, I haven't ruled out granite, though.

I live in the PNW, where the Pental showrooms are located. I am assuming they would have the Glass2, if I can just get there one day. Since I haven't seen it in person, I cannot be certain that it would look good with my cabinets or that I will even like it when I see it. On my monitor, the Glass2 in ash looks light gray rather than white. When/if I get more information, I'll let you know.

RE: Glass2

From what I remember glass 2 was maybe 3.5k for a small slab. I just remember it being more expensive than almost all the granite I saw. I want to say it was more than 70 a sq foot but you had to buy it by the slab.

RE: Glass2

Ouch, kinei, that's clearly out of my budget. Guess I won't be in any hurry to go to Pental to see it. I will, however, be going there one day to look at other things and will definitely want to check out the Glass2, even though it's beyond my means.

RE: Glass2

Sail
I also did not want the grout lines and after I dismissed the glass, wanted large subway to minimize grout lines.
I never could find the right color in large format.

Glazier glass has large format back painted tiles that can be painted any SW or BM color. Bear glass will also customize to any size tile or template.

There is still the DIY ikea trick that I mentione above.

Also check to see if you have a local glass company that can cut panels for you.

The clearest glass is called starphire glass. Most glass has a green tinge but SP minimizes this.

You can keep you dream alive.

Otherwise there are companies with large format tiles.
Tile-shop in CA has some and will send samples. Heath also does beautiful tiles and will also send sample colors. They don't send full-size pieces but color samples. U think Ann Sachs also had large format.

Good luck!

Westsider40 recommended ThinkGLass

There is a lot to explore there

You mentioned you are in the PNW and so am I. ThinkGlass lists this place as an installer.

It all looks pretty interesting to me.

RE: Glass2

Thank you, a2gemini and donnaleen, for some additional ideas to pursue. I've had a horribly horrible day with my child today, requiring much patience and suppport, so that I was feeling totally demoralized. Having a few minutes to check in here and find these helpful responses is really great. I will definitely explore all of these possibilities.

Sail - hang in there - and come visit us on GW anytime you need a "fix".
BTW - I opened Glass2 - wow! Beautiful - now I am lusting these for my BR but sure out of range!
