i need a fine-grained wood for my cabs

wow, i just got my quote form the kd on my new cabs. since i picked out a custom door i liked my quote is 26 thousand dollars!

i have a budget of half that!

the wood is very finely grained eucalyptis (considered green i guess) and painted a really intriguing dark green. the green has some blue in it as well as brown, though it's so dark as to appear black in some instances.

my thought is to find another finely grained wood and try the finished colour on it to see what happens. any ideas which woods might work?

If you're going to paint the wood, why do you need a specific kind of grain? For painted cabinets, what about a renewable plywood?

because the grain shows through quite nicely. but that gives me a good idea, why not just paint the wood with a technique which gives the appearance of fine grain?...
guess i'll have to check into that--thanks for the idea!

Woods that are traditionally chosen for painting are maple or poplar. Also, MDF is an excellent choice for the recessed/raised panels in painted cabinetry as it's much more dimensionally stable and a greener choice than solid wood.
