Mesquite countertop??

Posted by kcinkc71 (My Page) on

We are finishing up our kitchen design, and have decided on a 2 tiered island. After many years in Texas, I would like to incorporate a little Hill Country love to the new house. Has anyone use mesquite for an island or other counters? Edge grain or face grain? We will use waterlox as the finish (in satin) if we go this route. Any pro's or con's? Not going to use it for food prep. thanks

It is gorgeous as countertop!!! If we had not brought our tree from Texas to make our countertop, I would have gone with mesquite. There is a guy outside Brenham that inspired us to do the wood. He does a lot of mesquite.

Hi kcinkc,

Below is a link to a post from ctycdm, that includes some pics of his bar/countertop. Really beautiful.

Maybe he'll see your post & respond.

You might also try searching for more of his posts for additional pics.

RE: Mesquite countertop??

We LOVED the edge grain from mesquite from DeVoss and actually went down to DS and met him and toured his shop. He's wonderful and his stuff is wonderful.

We didn't end up using it because we have natural wood cabs, floors, both dining tables, etc. and realized we would be drowning in a sea of wood. I'd still like to find some place to use it though in the future.

Sorry I can't offer any practical results but please keep us posted if you get it!

Thanks, I will look at the post you referenced. Yes, we are looking hard at DeVoss. We have samples of face and edge grain, they are incredible. I miss Austin and the Hill Country, and really want to make this work. Our cabs will be white, so I think the mesquite will be great. We should be done around the end of the year, I will post pics then. Might be in Austin this fall and will head out to DS for some Salt Lick BBQ and go out to DeVoss
