Backsplash: Can you tile directly onto drywall?

Mornin' Everyone:

After two years we are finally putting in a backplash. It will be simple white subway tile. I was always under the impression you had to tile on backer board or hardy board. However, I'm being told that's not necessary for a kitchen backsplash and you can tile directly to the sheet rock. Is that true? Will it hold up? Thanks.

As long as wallboard is in good condition. Meaning no large holes. Backer board comes in a cement type board and is used in showers where moisture will be an issue.

Our installers tiled directly onto the drywall. No problems.
