Berryberry's Finished Kitchen

OK, as promised here are the details and lots of photo's

BerryBerrys Kitchen:

Our goal was to re-do our 17 year old kitchen, original to the house. The old cabinets were standard builder grade and while looking good on the outside, were showing signs of wear (broken drawer guides, etc) internally. Plus the color scheme was, ummm, just a tad outdated  LOL.

We planned 90% of the kitchen ourselves, from doing research ahead of time, looking at magazines, and using the garden web and other internet resources. We met with 3 different cabinet reps / KDs to obtain quotes from three different cabinet lines  Durasupreme, Shiloh, and KahleÂs (a regional brand based a few hours away from us on PA). We obtained a few different ideas from the various KDs we met with and incorporated them into our vision. Our vision was further defined seeing a display of Omega cabinets at the one showroom which also sold the Shiloh line. This display is what we used in helping us design our plan and look.

In looking at cabinetry, we were impressed with the Shiloh brandÂs construction but they had no door styles, finishes that would give us the look we really wanted to achieve. Durasupreme was the least inexpensive of the group but also the least flexible (ie they couldnÂt do the special microwave cabinet we wanted to do). It was only by a fluke we came across Kahles. Even though they are based in Pennsylvania, we had never heard of them. But one day, when out looking at appliances, one showroom we stopped at had full type kitchen displays. Some of the cabinets we saw were fantastic  better quality than the Omega custom line we saw at the Shiloh dealer  and we thought they had to be full custom cabinetry. We asked one of the appliance sales people about the cabinets and he said a couple local contractors installed all the cabinets at their facility. We showed him the couple cabinets we liked and he told us they were all installed by a man named Dale Conrad. He gave us his number and we contacted him http://www.conradkitchenandbath.com/

We found out the cabinets were made by a company called KahleÂs  which sells regionally in the eastern part of the US. They are a family run operation and do things the old fashioned way as the quality of their cabinets can attest to (for instance note the full plywood TOPS on the base cabinets). They are based in northwest PA pretty much in the middle of nowhere. http://www.kahles.com/ As you can see from the website, marketing is not their strong suit but making top quality cabinets is. They happened to offer styles and finishes that we were looking for and help us complete our vision. Furthermore, we found Dale to be a forthright man to work with. And while his initial quote came in a lot higher than the other two, we worked together, thru some minor design changes, as well as advantageous scheduling to help him fill some down time to come up with a price that was competitive with the others we had received. Dale told us the job would take about 2 weeks (except waiting for the granite to be fabricated) and he was spot on. His crew was here 9 days and completed 95% of the kitchen, hooked up our old sink / faucet as a temporary sink and then we waited about 3 weeks while the granite was being fabricated. DaleÂs crew was back the day of the granite installation to disconnect the temporary sink and faucet, install the new ones after the granite went in and finish up some minor details. Two weeks of work exactly with no issues. The only issue we did encounter was with our DIY backsplash. The tile store initially ordered the wrong material so that delayed me installing it for about 10 days until they had the correct material shipped. Since we didnÂt order the tile until the granite was in, this pushed the final completion back slightly. .

Here are the details of our final product:

Details:

Cabinets  Kahles (http://www.kahles.com). Main cabinets are cherry wood cabinets, Laporte Full Overlay w/M-bead raised panels in a toffee stain. Accent cabinets are paint grade maple, Chadds Ford door in a beaded inset style with steeple hinges  painted antique white with brown glaze. All drawers are 5 piece wood, matching cherry wood light rails under the upper cabinets, maple veneer interiors, plywood boxes, wood shelves, dovetail drawer boxes, wainscot panels on all end panels where applicable, full extension soft close drawers, fluting at sink and fluted spindles at range, two different size of crown molding to match depending on height of upper cabinets.

Countertop: Vyara Juparana Granite  purchased from http://www.montgranite.com/ Our fabricators did a fabulous job  and are located in the center of PA, several hours away but our contractor uses them because of their high quality work http://www.bcstone.com/

I purchased the #39 Burnt Umber glass from Morena Tile (they shipped it to me from CA) Fire and Ice runs about $17.60 a sq foot plus shipping for me.

Our handles were amazingly inexpensive finds. On the cherry cabinets  we have Weathered Nickel Country French Knobs and Pulls ($1.30 and $1.79 each respectively from http://www.yourhomesupply.com/ The pulls on the painted cabinets are Liberty oil rubbed bronze pulls  bought in bulk from http://www.cripedistributing.com/liberty-rubbed-bronze-cast-pulls-25ct-p-3458.html?osCsid=fdc8cecbd915efd7d94705f4a30b531e $14 for 25 pulls

Such an improvement! I actually cringed when I saw the "before" pictures. That kitchen has come a long way. Love the light, the backsplash, the spice storage by the range, so many things.

Thanks for posting such detailed details.

Your kitchen is berry, berry beautiful!! Sorry, couldn't resist. I love what you've done - love the floor! I'm just curious how tall are your cabinets and why you didn't go to the ceiling? Is it a very high ceiling?

BTW, I have the same knobs and pulls from yourhomesupply! I love them!

    Congrats on a great job!

Your new kitchen is beautiful! Very well thought out & designed. Your old kitchen cabinets must have been supplied by the same rocket scientists who supplied mine, yecch. I must confess -- my favorite part is the view from the deck :)

Berryberry, your kitchen is beautiful. I love the cherry cabinets, the floor, your appliance choices, your counters, your faucets and hardware, your backsplash, the area for your microwave and all the other amazing things you have done to your kitchen.

I saved the informatin on your flooring (setting up a kitchen flooring file since first I have to decide on my hardwood flooring which is taken me forever) since I need a new floor in my kitchen and I decided to just put the hardwood floors in my family room, dining room and living room but to put a waterproof floor in my kitchen since it is open to the backyard and gets a lot of traffic going in and out of that room.

Berryberry, your kitchen turned out great! Love the way the cabinets, backsplash and granite tie together. Love the way your baby (Bluestar) looks, too. I'm wondering, with the spice pullouts, is the range effectively recessed more than 24"? I will have extra deep counters on either side of my range and would like to recess the range a bit, but thought that was against the install instructions. If I can't recess the range, I will probably do at least a curved counter near the range bullnose to avoid the hip bump.

Love the pastoral setting-- very beautiful and relaxing! Best wishes for many happy meals in your renovated space!

You know...I used to work with Sherry Derry Berry. Her husband Barry Barry (yes really) was a nice guy...

Oh that's not what this is about...

I love the new kitchen! Great flow and color work.

I do however miss the space ship above the island. I had on myself...it was so ummmm lovely and stuff (you wonder if the original home designer indulged in crack...)

Anyhoo, lovely change Ms Berry Berry.

Thanks for posting more photos BB.

In your "Before" photos, the lighting above the island is, well, "interesting." What in the world is that large silver thing sitting at the far end of the island?

And what is that silver thing hanging on the wall? LOL I'm too impatient to ever use a rotary phone again but in silver they sure look cool.

    Great job BB! Great job.

    Jodi-

Oh, and as for the backsplash...I think need to come inspect it a bit closer, and then go out on your deck and check out the view for a day or two. WOW! And on my way out, I'm going to grab that wonderful ceiling fan. :-)

Great looking kitchen, what an improvement! That fire & ice backsplash is so good looking & versatile. I'm use to seeing it on Jodi in so calif's kitchen. It's fun to see it with another granite & cab color. The flooring is fabulous & the faucet color goes really well with everything : )
    Enjoy your new kitchen!

Thanks for posting. Your kitchen and view are beautiful. We are using BC stone also, so I'm glad to hear you didn't have any problems. I'm trying to decide on the sink, either the silgranit biscuit or black. How did you choose the biscuit? Any concerns that it will stain?

Love the phone, where's it from?

    Great job!

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

    To answer a few questions:

annettacm - thanks - yes, we love the view as well

cambro5 - the ceilings are 9 foot high. We felt that was too high to run the cabinets up that high. The wall cabinets are either 36" or 42" high (so before the crown molding, the top ends up being either 7 1/2 or 8 feet high. Add another 4 to inches or so for the crown molding. Yes yourhomesupply was quite a find for their inexpensive hardware - our contractor complimented the hardware and said we did a good job with finding something of very nice quality. I didn't have the heart to tell him how inexpensive it was.

Weissman - LOL - just the one appliance dealer you read about

Lynn - we have used tile from Daltile before and been quite happy with it. We really like this tile for how naturla it looks

morton5 - thanks. Our Bluestar sits out abou 1 1/2 from the wall. We still ran non combustible material behind the range (a piece of heavy galvanized sheet metal my brother fabricated for me). We then have a 1 1/2" strip of granite behind the range. At the front end, the door does stick out past the cabinet edge (you are correct, it is not supposed to be recessed behind the cabinets) but we used the spindle posts and curved counter on top to make it really blend in well. We have had no issues with the spindles being out equal to the Bluestar door

Igloochic - yea, the old spaceship above the island - LOL. It was nice to see that go

Inkycrab - thanks - we saw that faucet from Danze and thought it fit really well into our overall scheme. It seems really well built and e have been pleased with it.

Jodi - Not sure what first silver thing you are refering to (is it a before pic ?) But yea, the second one does look cool. Actually its a pushbutton phone made to look like a old fashioned rotary phone. We wanted to keep our landline phone there but were becoming a bit frustrated because there are not a lot of good wall phone choices that don't need plugged in til we saw this retro model.

Iris - yes, we were really pleased with BC Stone - they did a fantastic job. Everything fit perfectly and the one seam is really hard to notice unless you are really looking for it. We ended up choosing biscuit to blend in with the rest of the color scheme. I read enough good comments here about the Blanco silgranit in biscuit that I wasn't worried about staining. so far, its has been very easy to keep clean

Mindimoo - the phone is made by Crosley - I picked it up at the local Target but I believe you can also find it on Amazon.com

Berryberry - I've been out of town for a week and just saw your most recent pics. Your kitchen is beautiful. Cabinets, granite, floors, backsplash. Everything.

I'm the fellow Pittsburgher that you recommended BC Stone to. They came to template on Monday (had to hand the reins over to DH since I was out of town). We're getting a sink bump out too, and I was happy to be able to use your pics as an example! So far we're pleased with the way they handle things.

    Thanks again for your help.
    And enjoy your beautiful kitchen!

    Berryberry,
I love your kitchen! Great job! I like how you used full overlay and inset together. I've never seen that done before and it's really nice. I also love the microwave storage...the double door exterior is a nice detail! The backsplash is to die for!

I had to laugh that someone 'cringed' at your before photos! Me too. However, I have to say that I've been in the business long enough to have install numerous 'pickled maple' cabinets in my time. So sorry to the kitchen gods!!! I remember back in the day, though, that was THE look!

    Thanks for sharing.
    Kompy

ps. I'm so bummed to see your b/s isn't Dal-tile. I have an account with them and would seriously consider that for my own home. I'm currently remodeling my family room (open to kitchen) in a vintage contemporary look. That backsplash would look great in my kitchen. I'll have to google Jeffery Court.

Gardenburgher - thanks. Glad things have gone well for you so far with BC Stone. I think you will be pleased - I know we were.

Kompy - thank you. Its really nice to hear good comments like this from someone in the business - I really appreciate it. And yes, too bad the BS tile is not Dal-Tile (it would have been a whole lot cheaper - LOL). I really like Dal-Tile products alas, they didn't have anything we strongly liked for the BS. And given the size, it was the one area of tile I wasn't afraid to pay a higher per sq ft cost

pluckymama, yvette and maydl - thanks for your kind comments

I'm a little late to this thread, but I just wanted to say: GORGEOUS kitchen! I love everything!

And I am in PA, too... and know all about Kahle's! We have finally narrowed our upcoming kitchen remodel down to one of 2 designs, one is from Kahle's and one is from Kitchen Village (they have showrooms in Corry and Erie).

You're right, Kahle's is awesome. We've been working with Rick.
