Help with awkward granite counter/wall/cabinet

PLEASE help me figure out how to make this look better. Throughout the remodel, we were told that the wall would be built up under the counter top. This was previously just a half wall with spindle post as part of eat in dining area, when we remodeled we expanded the kitchen out to the half wall. The contractor intends to slip in a piece of wood and then cover with a piece of white trim, a trim which is used no where else in the kitchen, and does not match the oak trim at the bottom of the wall either. I just keep thinking ugh whenever I look at this transition between the counter, wall and cabinet.

How weird that they didn't bring it up to height before the counter was installed.

Is that the trim piece lying on the floor of the first picture? It will require more labor and fixing now that the counter is on, but he should be able to built it up/out, patch in the seam properly with drywall, and then if needed, a small trim piece. But, if he is intending to use the trim to cover the whole patchy job, I'd say--not acceptable.

Yes, that wall should have been built up to counter height before the granite install.

Remove 3/4" of drywall and screw new drywall that fills the gap. Tape, mud, sand, paint and done.

Anything other than what trebruchet said will look cobbled. The trim idea is goofy, your gut feeling is correct.

I second Treb and deedles.

No trim. Make the contractor do it right, no excuse not to do it just as Trebuchet has said.
