Cabinet cut out for garbage can

Does anyone have an area cut out of their cabinets for a regular step-on garbage can? I'd like a hands free solution to garbage so having a pull out doesn't really appeal to me and I'm not a fan of having the garbage can out in the open in the kitchen (against the wall, etc.). But I've never actually seen a kitchen with a cut out so I'm having a hard time committing to just a concept. Any ideas or photos would be greatly appreciated.

Would you leave the countertop continuous over it? (I would.)

Yes, it would be cut out of the long side of the island with a cabinet on one side and the end panel on the other. The cabinets will be white and there will be dark hardwood which will continue into the cut out, so I'm afraid it will end up looking a bit like a black hole.

vitaminjd--I don't remember where I saw it, but I swear someone had a mechanism for a pullout trash where you bumped/pressed a pedal with your foot in the toe kick area and the pullout trash can would slide open. That may be a good alternative so the trash stays out of sight, you don't have a black hole, and you still have a hands free trash.

Hope this helps!

Maybe this?

Here is a link that might be useful: Hafele foot pedal

Has anyone used that device with something other than just the 2 recommended models?

vitaminjd, I've spent too many minutes fruitlessly searching for you, but someone on GW did exactly what you propose and posted a picture of it. Try using Google, look at both images and web rests, and try multiple combinations of keywords. You might do better than I did.

OK, here's one. I found it by searching on "niche," but it's not the photo I was thinking of.

Grrr. This is exactly like not being able to remember an actor's name and having it completely take over your brain until you think of it.

A-ha! Here you go.

I confess, to me it looks a bit odd and difficult to use.

Thank you so much! I just discovered this forum yesterday and I'm so glad I did before these final decisions are made. I stayed up half the night reading posts.

The photos you've posted are exactly what I was envisioning but after seeing it I think I would be disappointed with that. I'm now wondering if I could reconfigure the island so that the niche is in the end of the island (across from the d/w and much less visible).

That foot pedal is interesting, I'll have to check into that. I didn't even know such a thing existed. I'm not sure it would completely solve our problem since we definitely want a covered garbage but it's a step in the right direction. I know that you can get pull outs with covers but then you have to touch the cover to open.

No, somebody makes a pullout where the trash can cover lifts off automatically when it opens.

Have you thought of using a full-height cabinet so the can is off the ground. The baseboard would be continious, and you'd just step a bit for the top to pop up?

I'm going to start searching because I'm going to start moving some cabs around to make a trash-pull-out next to the stove, too, because I do lots of prep there as well.

Glad you asked!
