Sorry, another two tone thread

Well, this is my inspiration picture (from boxerpups but I think somebody else might be using it as their inspiration pic too, if so, sorry). I guess I need it since I just keep going around in circles in trying to decide what I want. It was very hard to pick one since I'm not the most discriminating person. My DH loves wood, of course, and I like painted so this pleases both of us. Although he thnks I'm compromising, I do really love this.

I'll post my layout next picture, unless someone beats me to it.

But what about the island? I guess soapstone for the perimeter but I really want wood top for the island and we'll have wood floors. Yikes, is that too much wood? How do I coordinate all these woods. Should I go with a similar wood floor as in the pic? I had planned on going dark but maybe I shouldn't? The island cabinets? Not wood, right? Painted the same colour as the uppers, or a different colour?

Thank you to anybody who is willing to share their opinions with me.

That is a nice picture! I really like that wood tone with the warm white...that's such a nice combination and the pulls and countertop look great together, too. Also, notice how the pendant light looks good with the pulls, countertop and upper cabinets.

If it were me, I'd paint the island to match the uppers, use similar wood for the base cabinets and island countertop...and then decide on the floors. This picture looks great, but a darker finish would be nice, too. Maybe see if any other inspiration pictures seem better...or if this is the best one for you and your DH to reach a compromise. Hope that helps :)

My layout

The open shelves on the stove wall should go to the corners, right? Should they be just shelves or like upper cabinets without the door? On the fridge wall - I think tall white pantry by the freezer, not wood? Sorry, you can't see that but it's there.

This was one of my first inspiration pics and I still love it... didn't see it from this angle ever, though. Only this one:

Photobucket

I like Lav's suggestion or you could even introduce a little color on your island base?

LL - thank you for your input. Good, white painted island, that's what I was hoping for. I know it's fairly common here but I really like the look of a white island with a wood top. Mmm, to match the wood on the lower cabibets might be tough. I have seen a few other pics similar to this one but I like this one the best. Did you mean cup pulls in particular or just dark ones - is that orb?

Deedles - I'm glad you like (liked?) it. I have had this picture saved forever, I should have just stopped looking way back when. A different colour? I might be too timid - what would you suggest?

Do you think a different (tougher) backsplash would be fine, if it was the same colour as the upper cabibets.

I love that kitchen. It's not what you want, but I think that kitchen would look really good with a center work table or just table with a black iron base. You have some excellent work spaces. Do you really need to carry stuff back and forth from an island while you work?

I like how they kept the backsplash so neutral which really shows off the cabinets and the two tones instead of adding another thing to look at. It just compliments the two types of finishes. Looks great! I like the suggestion to do the island in the upper cabinet paint.

Sorry Deedles, you did say you still loved it, phew.

Rosie - What you said reminded me of someone else's kitchen, maybe oldhouse1?

Not black iron base but similar look, I think. I do love the look but I couldn't give up my island and my prep sink. I do seem to have tons of work space.

Gr8day - I really like that too, almost makes the uppers disappear, not that I have a lot of uppers anyway, and another vote for a white island.

Well, it's going to be a very nice kitchen anyway. :) I really like the layout, including the island.

I love those 2 toned kitchens. I'm really thinking about it for my kitchen now.
