Kitchen Island--Two Different Ceiling Heights?

Posted by vfoley74 (My Page) on

So we are in the middle of a kitchen renovation and we decided to open ceilings. So now half of our kitchen has vaulted ceilings with exposed beams and the other half (where the second floor is) has regular ceiling height. I think it will look nice.

The issue is that the island is in the middle of these two heights. What do you think? Have you ever seen this?

My parents' kitchen has 2 different ceiling heights. The eating area is vaulted ceilings with an oak ceiling. The cabinet part of the kitchen is regular 8' ceilings. They do have an island, but it is firmly in the 8' ceiling section.

That's exactly my concern! That the island (or most of it) should be in the 8' section of the ceiling, not half under the vault, half under the 8". The contractor says we have already done the rough and this is a big change.
