I found these at HD. Now the question is whether people actually used the refinishing kit who posted here instead of the paint like product. Perhaps you can tell form some of the pictures and descriptions.

I know someone who used the Transformations kit. They are veteran DIYers. It looks terrible, dark and murky, more like paint. It's the second time they refinished 80s cheap oak cabinets, so that may have been a factor. There are things far, far worse than golden oak.

Nosoccermom and Linelle , Thanks I did see the HD reviews but you're right to question it Linelle because it appears either by photo or description they are actually reviewing the cabinet transformations kit not the cabinet transformations refinishing kit. Rustoleum probably should have differentiated the product a little more. From what I can gather the original cabinet transformations is more like a paint product and the refinishing is more like a stain.

I used the original transformation (black) on a vanity and during the process was close to freaking out. That stuff just slid right off, so I just used a regular KILZ primer, paint, and poly.

I would probably try a gel stain and use thin coatings. I know it's also paint like, but I found that it was way easier to achieve professionally looking results.

Thanks Nosoccermom, Very interesting links. I had seen remodelaholic before and that looks great but we have soffits.
I'm most interested in the Cabinet Transformations Refinishing because it states no sanding- We have a ton of cabinets - not in the kitchen - thats tiny- but throughout the house.
I will say I was hugely impressed with Miller Musings gel stain success. I've seen a lot of Java over oak - but I too actually like the oak it's just the old somewhat strange finish - not golden - more like a ....I dont even know how to describe it ...it's light and has a slight lavender hint to it.

Well, gel stain doesn't require sanding either.
Is there a chance that your oak has some whitewash on it or is pickled?
