Double Range/Oven Question?

Posted by mom2sethc (My Page) on

Hello!

I have also posted this on Appliances, but I think you all can help me.
I am replacing my very basic freestanding 30" range. It is gas. I want a sleeker slide-in (no backsplash controls) with a better burner configuration than I currently have.
I was considering the GE Cafe range with a double oven. What do you all think of double oven ranges? Should I forget about the double oven and get a good single oven?
I wouldn't use the double ovens regularly, but I can see where from time to time it would be nice.
I can already see from my research that I don't have a lot of options if I go with a double oven.

Thanks!

Elaine

RE: Double Range/Oven Question?

I've lived with a single gas stove and a cooktop with a double oven.

I think your choice really depends on how many people typically cook at one time in your kitchen and your budget.

When one person cooks the single range works fine. If you have more than one cook in the kitchen at a time a range/cooktop and double oven may work better. Also keep in mind that you'll need a cabinet for a double oven.

RE: Double Range/Oven Question?

Hi!

I'm speaking of a stand alone stovetop/oven unit with 2 ovens. Not anything that I would need to place in a cabinet.

Thanks!

RE: Double Range/Oven Question?

I've been thinking about this also. At Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other special occasions, I would LOVE to have a double oven. A turkey or ham baking for several hours limits your space for the casseroles, desserts, breads etc.

One other plus would be not having to heat an entire huge oven for one dish, one pizza, bread, etc. Think energy savings!

One minor negative - would have to give up the storage drawer in the bottom. I'm such a creature of habit :)

Then again, for every day use for just the two of us, I don't really need it.

RE: Double Range/Oven Question?

My sister put in a 30" range with a double oven about four years ago (I think her's is a Jenn Air) and she loves it. She tends to use the smaller upper oven most of the time. I usually visit at Thanksgiving for a week and cook while I'm there, as well as preparing the holiday dinner. The larger lower oven is still plenty big enough for a 20 lb turkey and the upper works great for casseroles, baking break, etc. If I were doing a 30" range, I'd definitely go for one with double ovens.

RE: Double Range/Oven Question?

I've been using my double oven range for about a month now and I love it! I have the GE slide-in electric convection. I use the upper oven, with one rack, almost every day when I put just one pan in the oven. Actually today I put two loaves banana bread in the upper together. I can bake three sheets of cookies at one time in the lower convection oven. And they can both be used at once, so dinner and dessert! I do have to confess though, I thought the glass cooktop would be easier to clean. That's one of the reasons I went with electric and not gas. I hated cleaning the grates and wells on my gas cooktop, but the glass one isn't as easy as I thought it would be. Other than that, I love everything about it!

RE: Double Range/Oven Question?

I too have been wondering about double vs single GE slide-in electric range. I think on a daily basis, a single with a storage drawer are better. But will I crave the double for those 3 big holiday dinners per year?

I read a post somewhere that you could still use the lower oven for storage when not in use. Seems like a great compromise, but where do you put all the pans when you DO use the oven? I would think that relocating a pile of pans and baking dishes on those heavy company days would be a big pain in the neck.

Also, I can't help thinking that the lower oven is soooo low to the ground. In fact, the big reason I ruled out a cooktop with wall oven underneath was due to the oven being so low and the loss of the storage drawer.

My other thoughts that the larger oven is still smaller than a traditional oven, isn't it? Would it be too small for the big turkey and other big stuff?

RE: Double Range/Oven Question?

I am on my 3rd in 12 years. Due to moving, not problems with stove. I love it and rarely use the large oven, with the exception of large roasts/ham/turkey during family dinners.

The smaller oven is great, it heats up quickly and takes far less time to clean. Mine also has a toast option, can toast any type of bread/bakery and thickness is not an issue. As quick as a toaster with added benefit that a bunch of toast is ready and hot at one time. I got rid of my counter toaster.

There are a bunch of options for the ranges. Each model has different selections. Check all of them to make sure you get what is wanted. My range is Maytag. Temps and even cooking has not been an issue.

Admission that I do not know how this range works with a large family. But two ovens gives so much room and ability to cook for at least 10 during holidays.

RE: Double Range/Oven Question?

The bottom oven of the GE double I have is 4.4 cubic ft. That's the same size as a standard range oven. The one thing you do without is the storage drawer. If you really need that storage, the double range may not work for you. But if you can find storage for pans elsewhere in your kitchen, then having the two ovens if great.

RE: Double Range/Oven Question?

Hello Everyone,

Thanks for your input! I have come to a stumbling block though that I need to resolve. I have the dreaded OTR microwave, it doesn't do a good enough job with the basic oven that I currently have. I will need to find a new home for it, and get a better vent/fan before I can move on to a better range.

Thanks!

RE: Double Range/Oven Question?

Well, this is a timely post for me! I too want a 30" double oven range. I really want to get rid of my toaster oven after our kitchen remodel. I found two from GE...one is a Cafe and one is a Profile. Is there much difference between the two lines?

I have cafe line from GE and love it. It is considered a bit higher than the profile line.

RE: Double Range/Oven Question?

We put in a GE double oven 30" when we did our kitchen 4 years ago. The smaller upper oven gets used every day, and replaced having a toaster oven on the counter. It heats up very fast and is big enough to bake evenly too.

I do store cast iron frying pans in the lower, but it's a cinch to pull them out and stack them somewhere when both are in use. Not just holiday hams and turkeys either. Birthdays one can come home, put dinner in the top and a cake in the bottom. Last week had both going for zucchini, loaves in the upper and trays of Parmesan pepper breaded sticks in the lower.

RE: Double Range/Oven Question?

LOVE my Cafe! Although it has the smaller oven on the bottom, I think there's a newer version that has it on the top. Love the griddle and the high BTU burner and the convection oven and the stainless pro style look. And it fit my budget, which was very important. I'd love to have had a range that cost twice as much, but the rest of my kitchen would have suffered if I had done that. The Cafe meets 95% of me needs. There are a couple of times a year when I wish I had a 36" with 6 burners, but that's when I pull out the portable induction hob.

RE: Double Range/Oven Question?

Well, it sounds like you are thinking about a GE Cafe double or single oven. I just purchased the double but it is not installed yet-- waiting for contractor. I liked almost everything about both but struggled with the choice of one vs. two ovens. I finally decided that, even though I would not use the second oven very often, I would be sorry enough everytime I needed two that I should go ahead and go for it. I hope/think I made the right decision. Good luck.

RE: Double Range/Oven Question?

Hello!

Glad to see so many positive comments about the GE Cafe! We are going to go with the double oven.

Thanks!
