You have a classic, clean lined vintage look going and it's working beautifully except for the floor. The floor needs to be less busy in this design. Either one size tile or one single color in the floor to pull it together.

On the freestanding island, it looks like metal. A wood version might be less. You could try Craigslist for marble tops and secondhand stores for a base. A lot of the cost could be in the thickness of the marble. That's a great island idea, but if your kitchen is small you might want one with more storage in the long run.

For the island - do you have a piece of furniture that you can re-purpose; or, keep your eye out for one that you can. I am taking the 6' base of an entertainment center for this purpose as the entire piece is too large and DH has never been crazy about it (bought it before we were married). I have painted and glazed it and DH will be adding support to back this weekend, then I am going to have a piece of remnant marble along w/ a prep sink installed once floors are done. In another area of the kitchen, I am using an old maple workbench that has drawers for storage.

Just keep your eye out on Craig's list or ebay and you might run across something more in your price range - good luck!

Love the metal/wood combo on the island and love the texture and colors in the floor...I think those add just the right touches to an otherwise sleek and what could be a 'seen it everywhere' classic look. You have a good eye and feel for this!

I second the motion to keep an eye out in places like ebay, craigslist, estate sales, etc. for something that will work for the island even if it wasn't meant for that use originally (Look past the first impression), as well as places like Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, or IKEA for something that might be able to be adapted to this look.

For the stools I'd prefer to see something more honestly industrial/commercial, or something rustic.
