To granite backsplash or not to granite backsplash?

Posted by mkiv808 (My Page) on

To clear things up: I am not referring to a full backsplash, just the typical 4-6" granite backsplash that extends from the counter.

I personally never liked it, but I do want to do things that will have a positive effect on resale.

The townhouses in this complex all have it by default.

I do plan on doing tile eventually as a backsplash on half of the counters. The other half does not have cabinets above it, just wall and a window, so it'll remain just painted wall.

What do you all think?

There's no need to do the 4" backsplash particularly if you're going to tile down to the counter - some people do both but it's just a matter of personal preference - I doubt it would affect resale either way.

If you look through the finished kitchen blog and kitchen magazines, you almost never see that little 4" granite BS anymore. Most people are doing just tile, all the way down to the counter. Either way...it would not affect resale.

I agree, I don't think that it would affect resale. I don't really cafe for the 4" backsplash. I have seen a granite backsplash on this site, that was all granite, and looked great, but the 4" does nothing for me..in fact that might be a turn off if I was looking for a new place.

After you do your counters, if you have left over, I say go for it. Better there than sitting in garage collecting dust. I needed more than one slab, so the left over is going to be a full spash except in my desk area and that will probably be 4-6 ". (only because I will not have anymore left).

Mkiv808,

I do not like the look of the 4inch backsplash. I had
many granite sales people try to convince me to do it.
I love the look of a separate backsplash from the
granite. Or a full granite backsplash I have seen in
European kitchens.

Wow, I sound like a horrible snob. Truly I am not, I just
wanted to say if you do not want to have the 4inch BS
go for what makes you feel good about your kitchen.
Your kitchen will resale easily without it. I agree
with ccoombs1 that in magazines and fkb you rarely
see it. And as for resale you won't have issues.

I don't like the 4" backsplash for the following reasons:

- if you are doing a decorative tile for the rest of the backsplash, you are now decreasing and cutting off your design area by 4".

- the 4" creates a little "shelf" that gets dusty, just one more thing to clean.

- added expense to install the 4" piece of granite along your countertop.

- people who say you "need it" to cover a gap between the countertop and the tiled wall just don't have good installers. My kitchen walls are extremely out-of-plumb, but my tile backsplash meets my granite countertop with no gaps cause I had experienced installers.

- IMHO it looks dated, since the 4" idea was popular with formica in the '70's.

I would only do a 4" backsplash if I were doing no other backsplash at all and just leaving drywall on the rest of the wall. And even in that case, I'd try to make it a little higher, like 5" or 6".

So, you all think it's OK if the one wall has no backsplash at all? This is the wall that has no cabinets, just a window. The walls that have cabinets will have tile backsplash eventually. But for a while my "backsplash" will be wall, maybe for a year.

If you do go without a bs for a year, you might want
to paint the walls to help keep them clean. It will help
prevent damage by grease, water or general kitchen use.
Some people have put up a thin vaneer or beadboard or
wallpaper or even tin as a temporary backsplash.
Here are some ideas.

This has a white tile bs but I wanted you to be able to
visualize a room without. This pics white bs is similar to
the walls.

RE: To granite backsplash or not to granite backsplash?

I loved my copper canyon granite so much, I had to run a 4" backsplash as I wanted to see it in front of me when I walked in the room! I found copper rust corinth slate tile that matches the floor and looks great from the granite up to the cabinets. I guess I am stuck in the 70's! haha. Plus, I just went from having a tile countertop and hated cleaning the white grout lines at the corners where the backsplash and the counters came together and vowed that I will never have a light color grout line to clean again. I guess it is all personal preference. I am not worried that the 4" backsplash will have any bearing on my resale value as I have a brand new kitchen in process and done by my DH with everything I ever wanted. Designed by me and installed with love! (mostly, but there is some grumbling at times) lol. And also, not planning to sell my home anytime soon.
