Photo (posted on Things that Inspire) is from a Bobby McAlpine house for sale in Atlanta. I love the clean look of the range under a window with no overhead vent.
Anyone aware of a downdraft that would be sufficient for this range? |

Hi Emmachas, Yes, the range looks dramatic in that setting. But it seems to me that this is one of those designer moves that has no bearing on the practical reality of cooking. (GW has helped many of us detect those un-tethered-to-reality designer moves that we so often see in magazines.) Perhaps you could get away with a downdraft with a 30" pro-style range like that Wolf (not that I would recommend it ever) or with a regular residential range. But with a 48" pro-style range with a griddle or grill, this would be completely insufficient for capturing the smoke and gas/heat from a range that is capable of giving off perhaps 10,000 BTU when all six burners and the grill are fired up On the other hand, there are several examples of high-functioning kitchens on GW with windows behind the range. I'll try to post some links to those for you. (If you want to get an entertaining response with lots of ranting, just for fun you could post this on the GW appliance forum.)

That is all about looks and NOTHING about actually cooking in that kitchen. It might as well be a stage set or museum piece set to showcase those red knobs. If anyone ever uses that range, the glass would be cracked from the high heat put off from the beast and there would be dirt all over the walls and cabinets from oils carried there attracting and holding on to dust. I'd bet only the MW in that kitchen gets a workout.

Thanks for the responses. I loved the look, and was not aware of any downdraft that would even be sufficient for my 36" La Cornue. Since there's nothing new available, must just be another sad case of form over function.

I see an unfinished kitchen in the OP's photo. Also, a lot of wasted space, if they can take a photo from so far away. And if I really wanted something symmetric I would do better than that. All in all, it's too much silly symmetry.

They could have at least gotten the handles on straight!!

Just a thought, but a (practical) variation would be to put such gorgeous windows and curved slab backsplashes to either side of a showcase range and then some sort of minimalist range hood over the range.

I'd quit cooking for that kitchen. Is that a fire escape ladder outside the window? Would you have to break the window to use it? I would have to think about that for a minute. |

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed the handles being crooked.

Come on. That room has a high ceiling that would allow heat to rise away, and if the owner doesn't also have good air conditioning and a housekeeper or cleaning service rendering most of the "problems" nil, I'll eat my screen. I actually spent years in an old bungalow with my 48" antique Wedgewood stove and a weak little fan in the 8' ceiling (turned on with a chain) my only ventilation--aside from the windows, of course. We liked it as it was too much to take on the enormous expenses of modernizing this house (on a slab, plus required a second floor because of the tiny lot carved into the side of a mountain). Now, I really like my current modern ventilation, but really, life was so doable without it. EVEN when I was the housekeeper. It's all about what's important to YOU. Tradeoffs.
