Installation issues . . . cabs not square

Posted by catlover5 (My Page) on

So the cabs are being installed now as I type this; however, installer is having a heck of a time as the cabs, not the walls and floor, are not square. He said he will make it work but we are taking pictures along the way to go back to KM.

How am I, the consumer, supposed to know if a cab is not square? Some items were replaced three times due to paint issues and door cracks. I specifically went with what I thought was a brand name.

Frustrating!

catlover - That sucks! How frustrating for you. I assume it isn't so bad that you need to stop installation and return the cabs, or isn't that even an option at this point?

Usually it is the walls that are not square. You need to check them with a square (tool) or a couple of levels showing they are not aligned properly. Just a photo of the cabinet will not prove to KM that the cabinets are at fault unless they are bad enough that they should go back. I'd stop right now and call KM or your dealer and have them check things before you wind up with a bigger mess.

We had a couple of cabinets that weren't square. Our GC tried his best to make them work, but it couldn't be done. Medallion replaced them free of charge and the cabinet person we ordered them from felt so bad at the delay that he paid for the upgraded glass we wanted in our upper cabinets.

RE: Installation issues . . . cabs not square

I took pictures with the "square" tool to show KM the cab issues at my installer's request actually. I asked about stopping but was told he could make this work. It's funny, DH is the dramatic one, not me. It's progressing and I don't know what he did but he is getting things to line up and everything is looking okay. Maybe I am living in Shim City. At this point, I really don't care and that's an awful place to be in. It's a tiny kitchen, certainly not high end, but it is my kitchen and I want it to look nice and function. I miss home cooked meals.

Can't anything ever be easy?

 o
RE: Installation issues . . . cabs not square

No.

Easy = Something later will hit the fan that will cost triple because you'll need to have "easy" redone and other damage fixed because "easy" was hiding it.

Take my word for it:
3x now on my roof & now my back porch is leaking
4x on the new gutters
4x on different plumbing issues
2x moving the water softener & well tank to prevent freezing
ALL my electric rerun
2x having my whole back porch rebuilt
will be 3rd time having barn rebuilt
2x on my MBR install because my plumber just plain SUCKED (& wudn't listen)
Even 2nd time on extermination for termites.
Shall I stop?

 o
RE: Installation issues . . . cabs not square

No, I'm afraid not ;)

Actually, I bet there are many things in our remodels that go just swimmingly, but we never notice those. Only the problems stand out. When I talk about my GC, I list the screwups, but he actually did a lot of stuff well, too. Human nature, I guess.

Oh Christine, I'm so sorry. Is the tendonitis (sp?) all better? I hope so.

Ginny, you are right! Thank you for the perspective.

The cabs are in. He has to come back after we install the toe kick heater and purchase the range hood and accessories to do the crown and toe kick molding.

Oh, I can't wait.

RE: Installation issues . . . cabs not square

Tendonitis, catlover, is still kicking my butt. Thank you for asking.

I'm actually wondering if it's not tendonitis, but some nerve damage. I have gone thru a weird spell of knocking my elbows on something. That bone that sticks out must be 3 feet wide, because I turn a corner and WHAM. This whole thing started shortly after the first few big bumps. I have considered this conclusion because my sister ran into something and it hurt her down thru her wrist and up into her shoulder!

Ginny is right. We see so much wrong. I'll bet the work people would like to hear something good once in awhile! Mine? They just disappear with my money or materials, so I don't have a chance to congratulate them on something good.

I'm looking forward to seeing your kitchen. And don't worry about shims. That's what we all use to get things square. What's the difference if they're on the wall or the cabinet as long as the cabs close properly, right?

RE: Installation issues . . . cabs not square

My concern with racked or out of square cabinets would be the fit of the doors and drawers. Doors may end up with uneven gaps with their neighbors, and drawers may stick or not fit.

Have your installer check that doors and drawers fit on the "made them work" racked cabs early on to test the fit and appearance.

Will do so chiefneil - thanks.

Christine, have you considered a chiropractor? My family always used a chiro but I was very skeptical until I pinched nerves in my neck and back trying to shovel my car out of a snow bank. I was in AGONY. I went and found great relief after the first visit. It took about 3 visits and the nerve pain was greatly relieved. I am just very careful now how I carry heavy things and how I shovel out my car. I hope you feel better soon.

Can't anything ever be easy?

I wish. I recently couldn't even get the right paint color which I realized AFTER I had painted a bunch of stuff with the wrong color.

I too would be worried about the drawers and doors though, with out of square cabs.

 o
RE: Installation issues . . . cabs not square

No, catlover. I won't.
I teach therapeutic yoga and have to deal with too many people who have had something badly cracked. Without extension in the spine, frequently all those cracks do is wear the vertebrae "edges" off. Never good.

Plus, I don't want someone messing with my elbows.
Now, acupuncture? My neighbor trains all the acupuncturists in the area, so I've just started considering talking with him.

I realize chiropractic therapy has its place, but it makes me nauseous when something on my body cracks by itself, let alone paying someone to do that to me! LOL!

HI Christine,

You're probably tired of "Have you tried X?" posts asking things that are totally obvious, but here's another, just in case. :-)

Have you tried seeing a neurologist? I'm seeing one for upper back and neck pain. He did a whole bunch of weird neurological tests on me the first time I saw him. Since I have a tiny bit of tingling in my wrists, he did a test of the ulnar nerves in my elbows, and maybe the other nerve in there too. I can't remember the details, just that it's something they can check and can try to fix if the pain is bad enough.

(In my case we decided not to mess with the occasional tingling in my wrists and feet. It's sort of lost in the noise compared to the neck and upper back issues and isn't causing any real-life problems.)

I have a similar opinion of chiropractors. I've tried them once or twice but it didn't do any good except maybe in the very short term. And then I started hearing horror stories like "Yeah, every year we get maybe one or two people in our ER with minor strokes due to vertebral artery tears caused by improper neck manipulation." Um, no thanks! I might let one work on my lower back if I ever have problems there, but that's it.

I hope you heal up soon!

Laura

Christine, go figure. I would have more reservations about needles being stuck into me than being cracked but I have heard wonderful things about acupuncture so if you can get past the little stick part, it might offer some much needed relief. Nerve pain is the absolute worst! My boss started with yoga this year and he loves it. He said it is a great stress reliever.

lwerner, I heard that stroke thing AFTER I had my treatment about the cracking of the neck leading to strokes. I never had my neck cracked again but it did make me feel better and I was in agony. My chiro did mention seeing a neurologist if I didn't get any relief but thankfully (maybe it was positive thinking) I didn't need to do that.

All I can say is I wish good health to all. Money is nice and I have been told can be a lot of fun but without good health, it means nothing.

Oh, BTW, I took my leveler thng to all my cabs and they are square front, back and sides so I guess Shim City is doing okay. Now, if I could just get my Riverby sink and vent hood, I might be okay. But the second my installer left, my orange girl cat was in there checking things out and I thought I was going to rip the cabs out of the wall with my bare hands. She immediately found the open space between the wall and the back of the lazy susan and jumped down. I told myself to remain calm but ran to get the bag of cat treats and shook it. She was able to right herself and jump out but now one of the shelves is over the open space. It took less than 1 minute for mischief to take place! =^..^=

Have a great day!

Oh, catlover!
Once, my plumbing leaked & caused the unit below's ceiling to collapse. OMG.
When the plumber came to fix my upstairs stuff, he ran out for a wrench or something stupid. when he sad his big plumber's crack down to work on the pipe, there, in the wall looking back at him was my little cat's face. Scorpio had wanted in and out of those fascinating dark places...

I hadn't considered a neurologist. It might be the way to go, because thinking about it, this pain does follow the ulnar nerve.

Tingling in your fingers, depending upon the finger, can tell you which vertebrae in your neck is impinging what nerve. That can be fixed with (yoga) stress relief, alignment, and patience. Normally, anyway. But it takes time to work your body like this, rather than a nice loud SNAP! I wish YOU luck! :)

I think I'll call my neighbor...

RE: Installation issues . . . cabs not square

catlover, I'm so glad that your cabs turned out after all. Kudos to the guy who installed them. On to the next problem, I mean project!

 o
RE: Installation issues . . . cabs not square

Chiros are no different than MDs in that not all of them graduated in the top 50% of their class. There are good ones and bad ones. I've been a nurse for 25+ years and I've seen my share of doctors... some are downright scary.

I love my Chiro and my life would be much harder and more painful without him. He's a highly skilled individual and neurologists refer people to him, which is saying something. Never a good idea to have blanket prejudices against a group or individuals...

Catlover: glad your cabs are working out!

 o
RE: Installation issues . . . cabs not square

I don't rule out chiros at all.
I rule out cracking. It absolutely turns my stomach.

I'm more likely to head for an osteopath. I tend to go to alternative medicines before I head for traditional treatments. The steroid thing I did was simply because the Dr. (whom I think is quite on top of things) wouldn't renew my cholesterol meds without a physical. Since I'm healthy as a horse and never go, I had to acquiesce. I wasn't hip to the steroid thing and am glad to be past it.

But no, deedles, I am not at all blanketing all chiros together, more than I would shoe salesmen. I just cannot tolerate the cracking and what I know it does to the vertebrae.

RE: Installation issues . . . cabs not square

We just discovered a boo boo. He hung the cab to the left of the window 1.5 inches too low which can easily be moved up but that means the FR panel was cut too short and the FR cab has to be moved up as well with the filler. Eeek.

 o
RE: Installation issues . . . cabs not square

Oops!

Well, the guy sounds like a miracle worker. He deserves some slack -- and frankly, I think he'll be fine fixing it. Given how hard he must have sweated those cabinets? This sounds like nuttin' !
