Question on tiling a window sill

Hi all,

I'm in the process of tiling a window sill using glass subway tiles. I wanted to know if I need to put a backerboard or something equivalent on the top portion. I will be using Versabond as the thinset. Thinset instruction says not to use on hardwood for some reason. The window sill is next to a faucet so there will be some splashing.

Currently, the tiles are nicely spaced with each other. If I use a 1/4" backerboard on the top, the tiles will have a noticeable gap.

Did you leave any gap for caulk between the countertop and the first course of tiles on the wall? You do need to leave some space there for joint movement, and from your photos, that will give you almost exactly the rise in measurement you need to lay the backerboard on the sill.

What are your grout joints going to measure?

(You can't use wood because it shrinks and expands too much and might crack the tile right off.)

Looks like lovely tile, have fun!

I cannot tell -- what is the top surface of the sill currently made of?

I wonder if you could use Ditra?

From the picture, it looks like it's the 2x4 framing lumber that is showing.

There is no way I'd stick tile to a 2x4. Solid wood is not stable, and even a tiny flex from normal changes in moisture content between summer and winter can cause the tile to pop loose. Even if the tile stays put, it's likely the grout will crack and then water can work it's way into in.

I feel it would distract from your backsplash. If you have any of your counter available, perhaps use this for a window sill.
