We have chestnut (also dark), and framed a new window. We used red oak (two coats of medium brown dye, layers of blond and garnet shellac, clear seal). The red oak grain seemed the best match with the doors and other woodwork.

You'll need to decide whether you want the cabinets to match or to contrast. Match would be tough.

Thank you! I guess match is a strong word... maybe "go" is more what we're after? Something that looks like it goes with the rest of the house, a perfect match is not going to happen. I hadn't really thought much about trying to do a full-out contrast. Hmm.

My trim was making me crazy on a match because in some areas (the light? variations in how old varnish aged?) it seemed to have a reddish cast but in other areas no red at all. I'll face this again in a section in the living room that needs attention.
I take it that it's an old house like ours. Borrow some red oak doors in darker stains to see how it looks. Same with alder/rustic alder.
If neither seem right, consider painted maple, or painted uppers and wood lowers.

Thanks! Yes, the trim does vary throughout the house. Exactly as you said, in some places it looks reddish and in others, not. I will try to get a hold of some doors to bring home and see what we can come up with. Thanks for the suggestion!

Monitors aren't great on color necessarily, but the Havana stain in oak looked to be in the ballpark.
In paint, the yellow had a nice old house look.
