| We are looking for a recommendation for a slate manufacturer. We are reading that it is important to use a high quality slate product. We plan to use slate for our kitchen floor and are looking for a product that has the following attributes:
- smooth surface (but not as smooth as ceramic tile)
thanks! |

| Our Montauk slate (Black Blizzard) will be installed next week. Came from MLW Stone in Norcross GA. They were great to work with, they were able to cut the tiles to 12x24, altho that is not shown on the website. Our local dealer is International Tile and Marble in Chesapeake VA. http://www.mlwstone.com/stone_products/default.aspx?cat=148 Good luck. MQ |

| Sheldon Slate, in upstate NY-multigenerational, family owned business. They ship all over the country. Really nice people. We even toured the fabrication site. |

| We used 24"x24" natural cleft Montauk Black Slate for our recent (October 2010) kitchen reno. Here's a shot The tiles are guaged so they're all the same thickness. The natural cleft surface is sufficiently smooth so that it's not slippery when wet but not as smooth as ceramic tile. We got ours from ask4roca.com. They were. great to deal with and had the best price we could find. You can purchase samples from them to give yourself an up close look. |

| We put slate in our master bathroom after getting A TON of different samples from a huge variety of distributors. I agree with Darbuka - Vermont Slate is the only way to go. Sheldon slate was great. We went with Camara slate in VT and are very happy. |

| We ended up choosing to purchase from American slate co. We selected ember ash, a dark grey slate from brazil. Our install is in process and we have just come to realize (a bit too late) that our slate scratches easily. So easily that the vacuum cleaner scratched it and we are terrified about what the table and chairs will do. How do you manage the scratches? We are so concerned that we are considering throwing away a lot of money and switching to porceline tile! |

| I am not a slate expert. I fell in love with slate 45 years ago when the hospital I worked at as a teen had recently added an addition and the ground floor had slate in a very large Versailles pattern. It is still there (as I have returned some years later to work at the same hospital). There are all kinds of carts run over that floor daily. It is a green color. I assume it was mined in New England. They keep it waxed or something. It is still beautiful. I have samples of Vermont slate in a variety of colors and they scratch. I have Brazilian Montauk that I got as a special order from HD. They seem to scratch the same. I've read that Brazilian slate is good. So I will be installing the Brazilian Montauk that I special ordered from HD. It looks very good. But scratches are not a concern for me. My slate floor tile is going in my bathroom/mudroom/spa ;) I don't mind "patina" as I have soapstone in my kitchen. Porcelain is very durable. |
