I have 50 inches from countertop to countertop and that is more than enough of room to have both open at the same time. My dish drawer is just a bit past the dishwasher but the flatware drawer and miscellaneous cookware drawer is directly across from the dishwasher.
I think you could get by with 48 inches if you need and inch or two elsewhere.
