Anyone Dealt With Putting Beam Through Cabinet?

Hello to all you helpful and creative people,

I had to have a beam where I tore down a wall between DR and Kitchen. In order to have a nice symmetrical sink run next to the fridge cabinet, the fridge cabinet had to be built around the 4" by 8" beam. I decided not to have a really weirdly shaped cabinet door up there so I opted for an open (really deep!) shelf. Please see elevation and 3-D rendering of current plan.
I want to have the little backwards L-shaped trim bits that are around the beam removed. I think that will look better. Does anyone have an opinion on that?
Alternately I could have a shelf put in at the level of the bottom of the beam, but there would only be about 3 1/2" H of shelf space because of the crown. Total space above cabinet over fridge is about 13 1/2"
Another alternative would be cabinet doors to the right of the beam, with the one on the upper left being smaller than its mate in order to keep the center line over the cabinet below lined up.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Catharine
