I know the forum's OTK (one true kitchen) is the "Something's Gotta Give" kitchen...
But do you have an OTK? Do you want to recreate a kitchen you spent time in, as a child? Or maybe a movie or TV show where you think...that's my kitchen, I could really cook in that kitchen! Or, that kitchen is beautiful, I'd love to have that in my house. For me, it's Laura Calder's original kitchen, on "French Food at Home" (on the cooking channel)
So, what is your OTK? Do you have one or just letting things evolve as you go? Or maybe combining different kitchens that you really like? Thanks for sharing :)

| My favorite kitchen is the Tobi Fairley I saw on greige. It is where I got my color inspiraetion, even though in real life it would be nowhere near the same, because she told me the colors, and they are both gray, even though they look beige and blue. So my kitchen used that as a springboard, and I took it from there. That kitchen is bigger than my whole HOUSE! OT, I bought my tabisland today!! Can't wait to get it in the kitchen! Nancy |
| It depends on where it's going. Which house, you know? But if I didn't have a house yet and just had a kitchen, maybe this with a few tweaks: |
| Not really. My new kitchen is completely unlike the last one I did, and I think that the difference isn't so much a matter of time, it's that the houses were completely different. For me the kitchen needs to accentuate and enhance the style of the house. Of course there are some house styles I like better than others, but mostly I like houses with personality and that personality needs to drive the kitchen design. |

| What is your OTK? The one in my head! Made up of bits & pieces of things that inspired me over the past 30-40 years; sorry but I can't send it to Photobucket. |
| I have so many kitchens I love, and they are all of different types, cosmetically. For cosmetics, I prefer beefy, and simple... Like industrial loft... a combo of simple utility and well-worn warmth. But, this is where my thoughts go when I think of favorite, dream kitchen... It appears, at first look, to be much too much like the forum's "OTK" to suit me at all, but it's not the white and black color scheme that speaks to me, or the fussier details, like the pendants or the beadboard and little feet, most of which I don't like. I love the elbow room, the expanse and heft of the island, the utilitarian storage that holds things like giant pots, and gives the small appliances neat and tidy, specifically planned homes. Things are out of the way, yet still handy and usable. I love the warmth and 'barefoot' feel, and that is semi-open, but separate. There are great workspaces and room for a big kitchen crew, like mine. It just yells to me, "All the kids are home and we're going to have a humongous, family brunch." :-) |
| The white kithcen in top picture looks like the "before" picture before I rip everything out and replace it with warm, dark cherry cabinets (or even an interesting laminate or acrylic surface), glass-tile backsplash in varying colors, and an oven I don't need to reach down to use. fori, isn't your oven upside-down? I've never seen one with the controls on the bottom. |

| I am guessing you have to push the drawer in to make it pop open, but it's also possible that no one actually cooks in that kitchen! |
| I love the one rhome posted. I don't know that I have one favorite, more a combination of a lot of them. |

| I don't have just one image in mind, but I'd love to have an Aga cooker, fridge and freezer columns, a walk-in pantry, and higher ceilings--all in keeping with the vintage theme, of course. Ohhh, I feel as if I just cheated on my kitchen...now I need to go take a shower... |

And from above...

| In my alternative life I live in a big loft in downtown Manhattan, a cast-iron, rough building -- or in an old factory anywhere, or in a Danish castle, and my kitchen looks like the one linked below. A girl can and must dream. But first I would want world peace. |

| That's cool, Farmgirlinky! If I'd thought more, I might just as easily cited yours as my OTK. And I have to admit to this other one, too. What can I say... I have a hard time picking favorites. So many kitchens, so little time! |

| I'd love a sunlight filled kitchen with planned space for books and other happy, colorful things. I also love the idea of a table in the center of the kitchen. I'm short and a table is a better working height for me than a counter. The kids could sit and talk to me while I cook, rather than our current situation where they try to watch me cook over the raised bar, I tell them to stop playing on the stools before someone hurts themselves- and then someone hurts themselves. This kitchen comes pretty close, but I'd want a vintage stove, different light fixtures and a different backsplash. |

| OK, now you've forced me to go through a thousand kitchen pictures to find my favorite. I don't know if I can narrow it down to one, but here is a Sarah Richardson kitchen I love, love, love:

I'll play along. I have tons of pics sitting in my kitchen inspiration file, but if I had to pick just one favorite kitchen, it'd be this one. Love the La Cornue range. The mock conservatory glass ceiling makes my heart beat faster. I love the marble tops and the burled walnut and mahogany island. And the coffee station you can't see on the other side of the room is perfect. You can see more of this kitchen and read all about it on Atticmag. |

| What a fun thread, lavender! I don't really have a OTK, but some of the kitchens that I simply love are courtesy of ayerg73, jbrodie, and pipdog. For my house a white-based kitchen seems right. But if I had a different kind of house, this is the kitchen I'd choose in a heartbeat: |
| This kitchen, featured in House Beautiful. Love everything about it.

| I DESPISE my tile counters and cannot wait for the day they come to demo mine. I am getting first crack at those things with a hammer! LOL! Don't hold back there, Bahacca. Tell us how you really feel about your tile countertops. A suggestion, though: a hammer is just too wimpy for that job. Go with a sledge hammer. You'll get the most bang out of it if you can find a place where you can hit the tile on the upswing - let the weight of the hammer do most of the work for you. This will work better if you're planning on smashing the cabinets to smithereens too. Very therapeutic. |

I actually found a very pretty tile, Skyblue Fireclay ceramic tile. It's made from recycled materials...I think about 60% :)
| Fouramblues, thanks for sharing that one.. I love it! What a great island. Needs a prep sink, of course ;-), but it's wonderful. |
| This is my current (dare I say 'final' OTK). Fell in love with this when someone posted it a couple weeks ago. Wish I had a bigger pic but it's just a display in a cabinet place in Maine. A.D.O.R.E. it. |

| The kitchen from Chrstmas in Connecticut -
but in yellow. I really like this one shown in The Laurel House blog:
although it is way too cluttered for my taste and has too many glass fronted cabinets. I would love an eat-in kitchen, but don't have the room for it in our current (and probably permanent) home. |
| suzanne-I just spent FAR too much time refinishing my cabinets by hand to take a sledgehammer to the counters and risk damage to the cabinets. I will have fun removing the backsplash, though. Same tile as my counters;-) |
| The chef in "Christmas in Connecticut" made me google "Hitchcock cameos." No, it isn't him. I wish I remember her name, but I love the kitchen of the poster who lives in Shaker Heights. |
| Deedles...that is so beautiful! And Red Lover, that kitchen is great. I know Lavender Lass posted it recently, too. Any idea where it's originally from? |
| So many to choose from! I almost want to pick something for various scenarios of life. Mostly, though, something kinda like this: |

| I'm not sure it's even my OTK, but I have loved this kitchen since the first time I laid eyes on it. Well the statue on the counter might be a little over the top and the topiary by the window needs to go. |

| It's not my OTK, but I love Don and Betty's kitchen on Mad Men. |
| I have to agree with Angie DIY. Sayde's kitchen really is spectacular, and I don't say that just because she's family (and I'm not fishing for a compliment back, sayde). What makes it so wonderful is not just how it looks, but how it looks in the context of the rest of the house. It's just perfect. And knowing what sayde's DH did to achieve it makes it more impressive. For me, any kitchen can be OTK if it is perfectly in tune with the period and feel of the house. In fact, in sayde's house the GW OTK would definitely not be the OTK. I think lavender lass's future French farmhouse kitchen with a bunny and bird BS will be OTK because she lives in a farmhouse in a country where the other official language is French. How perfect is that? |

| Rhome,I love any kitchen with a dedicated chocolate bar drawer! And of course yours and sayde's kitchens are so lovely: neither is matchy matchy, but both are so coherent, and meant for real cooks. Nice to visit them again. Lavender lass, what a nice thread you've started. Lynn |

| SO interesting to see everyone's OTKs! The variation proves to me that we should each really choose what WE love b/c there's no pleasing everyone : ) |
| You're right westsider, I just came back on here to correct my mistake. I realized I made her Canadian, when she in fact lives in Washington State. Sorry, lavender. (Not that there's anything wrong with being Canadian, as Seinfeld would say. I love Canada and I'd live there in a heartbeat. Especially Nova Scotia.) So she lives "near" a country whose second official language is French. Close enough for me. Still love those bunnies. |

| You guys are so funny! We're closer to Idaho, Montana and even Canada, then we are to Seattle...but most people think Washington state means Seattle. LOL No offense to all our friends to the west...but it is a fairly large state. So it's kind of a nice change to be thought of as Canadian, for once! And it would be fun to get the chance to practice speaking French once in a while....mais oui? :) I'm glad everyone is enjoying the thread...now, let's get back to more pictures and if you have more than one OTK, go ahead and post it! We've got a lot of room left on this thread, so why not have some fun? Oh, and I wanted to say thank you all for posting these beautiful pictures...and I especially like seeing the GW kitchens. So many talented people on the forum!

| Me too, me too! I wanna post more than one! ;) I'm captivated by it. Just something about the simplicity, the rustic with the modern, and the great lighting and plants. I can't quite picture my real self living there, but my childhood/adolescent dream of my adult self would fit right in! And really, there might be GW kitchens that are closer to my OTK than either of these beauties, but I'm too lazy to hunt them down. |

| Love the curtains above the stove in the canal house picture! Lol! I guess they did things differently in the 18th century, and with a houseful of servants! |

| Angie - Clipped! Pawa, wow. In that case, here are the others I took (none as good as the first, I am afraid) |

| The Big Chill kitchen is a favorite: I saved pics of this kitchen from a house in Savannah that I saw online when we were looking years ago. There is a lot packed in a small space and it's beautiful: The kitchen that we practically lived in on our Italy trip was wonderful. The big fireplace off to the right (out of picture) where we stored our nightly bottles of wine. The big couch to the left of the table (out of picture) where we drank said wine. The sinks, the funny and bright yellow fridge, the stand-alone oven (to the left of the fireplace in the pic). I loved sitting at that table and talking and eating and cooking. What a great place to hang out and really be with family. Two weeks in that kitchen made for some wonderful memories with family and friends! |

| I'll play...though I have a million and I'm not sure they relate at all to each other. Here's a recent one that I fell in love with. |
| And...a tip of the hat to backsplash windows, given we are going to have to figure out how to make ours look great. |
| And a galley or two to die for... |
| But this might be my very fav: |
| My kitchen probably won't end up anything like this, but this is the one that speaks to me--there's a sense of peace, if that makes any sense? With lots going on & I keep drooling over the serpentine (belongs to sixtyohno, hope she doesn't mind me sticking it here!) |
| Thank you Meganmca. I am honored that you posted my kitchen. It is my OTK. I can't believe that I have this kitchen. It is beyond anything I ever thought I would have. Right now I am making dinner for my KD from Lowes, her husband, daughter and GS. She is an old friend and she has not seen the completed job. Although we had the basic layout worked out she gave us good advice, laid out all the sizes, etc. The serpentine came from walking through a stone yard, stopping in front of the slab, instantly falling in love, hoping it fit our budget, and it was ours. Thanks again. Laura |

| Wish I had a OTK! Does anyone else think Kitchen Design is at all related to Wedding Planning? All I knew is I DIDN'T want want a white a white dress, DIDN'T want the Wedding March, DIDN'T want my father to "give me away," and a score of other didn't's! I knew what I didn't want, but didn't have a role model for what I did want. I did end up with a pretty traditional wedding - organ music, chapel, long dress and flowers, bridesmaids/maid of honor, "first dance," etc. but it would have been so much easier if I could have said "Dress/backsplash: white marble - check!" "Veil/jewelry/white pearls check!" "Wedding march Mendehlssohn check!" Valente's "La Romanesca" made me feel like my Van Gogh quartzite island countertop. When people say "It makes my heart sing," I think THAT'S what they mean. Not "lah-lah-lah" sing, but - Staggering w-t-f-ness jaw-draw-ping-ness SING I can totally see that Sertentine doing that for someone. |

| Like most of us on GW, I have a large folder on my computer filled with inspiration photos. But of all my inspirations kitchens, this is the one I have consistently returned to over the years. I cut it out of the November 1996 Better Homes and Gardens while home on maternity leave with my youngest son. I guess I was already feeling dissatisfied with our little 1959 starter home ranch kitchen. I think I bought our current home in 1998 in part as place to create this kitchen. Of course what I ended up creating is not nearly as grand as this kitchen. But still the overall feel was the inspiration. Note that this is a photo spread from 1996 in the not high- end magazine, Better Homes and Gardens. Already we see so many of the features we still use in our kitchens: bridge faucet, "vintage" pendants, stainless built-in fridge, microwave under the counter in the island, furniture-look feet/legs on the island, "pro-style" 36" range and stainless hood, and wooden perimeter counters. The dishwasher and chairs in the breakfast area are the only things that make it look a little dated. I know that no kitchen is "forever". But this one still looks great 16 plus years later. |

| I am surprised but not surprised at how many traditional kitchens there are here with my beloved inset -- sometimes beaded -- cabinetry. I am loving my own progress. I don't have an inspiration photo, but have bits and pieces in many photos. Keep 'em coming because I dream here. :) |
