Whitehaven cast iron apron sink: reviews?

Hi All,

We are doing a total kitchen renovation, and my husband and I like the looks of an apron sink. We are worried about porcelain chipping and about stainless getting smudgy. A woman at a local store suggested the Kohler Whitehaven to us and explained that it won't chip. We loved the look of the sink! Does anyone have it? If so, what do you think? And do you think the stainless racks at the bottom are key for preventing dish chipping?

I've only had mine for about four months. I love it. Cane sugar. I do have the grids, which I like because dirty dishes tend to sitfor a while at my house, sometimes overnight, on rare occaision 24 hours. With the grid I can rinse most of the yucky stuff out and clean the drain. I didnt think about it as 'fall protection' for my sink. I also have a SS Franke prep sink, and my old sinks have all been double bowl SS. I just will not dry my sinks with a towel to avoid waterspots. That is not going to happen at my house. So my SS sink always looks worse than the whitehaven. The Whitehaven just looks good all the time, with no effort other than a spray down of the edges if something splashed up (like emptying coffee out of pot). No water spots. I have some very heavy pans we wash in it. Several Le Creuset dutch ovens, and my latest addition, which I love except for its weight, a 14" Demeyere 7 layer SS fry pan. That thing is HEAVY! All those get hand washed in sink, not in dishwasher, the frypan sometimes three times a day! So far sink and surrounding marble countertop have survived just fine. I actually thought the contractors had damaged the sink while replacing the window above it. It was the only mark on the sink and I was not happy. With the marble and SS pans I have, I had gotten rid of all abrasive cleaners of any kind, so no one could use them accidentally on my counters. I finally decided to try and scrub out this mark on the sink with some barkeepers stuff. It came right off. Whatever it was is gone, all that worry and it just scrubbed away. So far, and it has only been four months, I am very very pleased with my Whitehaven sink.

Unlike the salesperson, Kohler does not say "it won't chip".

How lucky do you feel? You may keep it chip free until you're dead. On the other hand you may drop a slippery glass two weeks after it's installed.

No sink is perfect, but cast iron has a pretty good track record. I've seen and used a lot of cast iron (it used to be the default sink) and it is USUALLY chip free. I've never used (or actually seen anyone use) a sink grid but it would probably help.

I think your odds for chipping are higher if you use cast iron cookware but I think enameled cast iron will win in most other kitchenware fights. Maybe not versus a Crockpot insert. Now THAT is some tough crockery!

Thanks for the input! Fori, that is reassuring. Trebruchet, I checked the Kohler warranty, and they actually DO guarantee that the sink won't chip. This seems like a pretty good deal! I am tempted. :-)

I love my Whitehaven sink. Love, love, love it. So easy to use and clean. So useful. I even wash my hair there now. I love my kitchen and I love my sink, queen of the kitchen.

I have nothing of real value to add, but we just installed our new Kohler Whitehaven as part of a kitchen remodel and I can't wait to use it. I did tons of research on the GW forums prior to making my decision and decided that no sink is perfect, but this one seems pretty great. Also, my cabinet makers love working with the Whitehaven b/c it is so easy to build around. Good look with your decision!

PS to OOTM Mom - thanks for your helpful comments which make me more calm about my Le Creuset pieces and the new sink!

I am getting a very similar sink - Kohler Bakersfield - which has similar dimensions but no apron front. I had Kohler Entree for the last 15 years which was a deep single bowl cast iron sink. LOVED that sink and it's the whole reason I am going cast iron Kohler again. No chips, scratches, looked brand new after 15 years, sad to actually see it go!

We provided a customer with this sink and the finish is all scratched up in less than a year. Kohler sent out some cleaners to try fix the problem, but that is all they would do under their warranty.
