Dam broke!

Since I discovered this site, it's my new hobby(more like an addiction) I can't help myself! I was the one always complaining my kids were on the computer too much, hah, they're the ones nagging me now! But anyway, I'm doing a total gut and replace. It seems I held back from doing the kitchen for so long because of my fears, it's like the dam broke and want to replace everything kitchen and beyond! I'm up to my ears with decisions I don't take lightly since I'm the type who always always has regrets when its said and done(by the way have never been happy with a haircut I've gotten for example). So I'm posting pics of my choices so far. Decisions have been made with the abundant and collective knowledge found here. Interestingly, I'll be thinking of something I have to move on to, smaller but important choices just the same (vents, faucets, sinks, microwave placement, trash receptacle placement just to name a few) and lo and behold I open the forum and someone else has beaten me to the punch with posting similar questions about the same. The cabinets and floor are a done deal, uppers are in and waiting for floor so base cabs can be installed. I tagged my granite slab and hubs and I are happy and excited about it. So my question is the backsplash (which coincidently was a tile board sitting on the floor next to the door at the granite place as we were exiting) and I think would be a perfect (dare I say) match.

However texture is rough - would I be asking for problems keeping it clean? Please do, tell me your thoughts. Thank you sooomuch (whew)

What does your granite look like?

I, personally, am wary of putting very rough tile like that in the kitchen for difficulty cleaning. I cook a lot, and while I'm not messy, stuff does get on the backsplash. I don't think I could do it, but you may love it enough and be a neat enough cook to just go for it!

    Hi beaglesdoitbetter,

It's Luce de Luna. I knew I wanted a lighter countertop, and after reading here of the trials to locate white granite, I was excited to find this. The price wasn't bad either, but I have less than 30 sq feet of countertop. Not long ago there was an inspiration photo posted (I believe it was LavenderLass who posted) of medium stained cabs with a white countertop and rustic stone backsplash (with apothecary drawers), it's the look I have in my head. But the backsplash, as Breezy points out, may be to difficult to keep clean. Anyone with a roughly textured b/s care to share?

LOL Pamike1.....You are so right about being addicted to this website! I am too and as you said you have a question or situation to post and it's already here with so many choices and/or solutions posted by others. One of the reasons I think this is such a great website.

PS I love the backsplash you're looking at and think if you love it you should go with it.

On my monitor, the backsplash looks significantly bluer in its undertones than the quartzite. It may just be the pic. In any case, it seems to compete to me.

That is one heck of a gorgeous stone! There is no way I would ever put a tumbled/rough stone with it.

That stone looks like it needs a polished marble backsplash, or a gray glass backsplash. Or is there anyway to have that stone be used in slab form for your backsplash?

That stone looks a lot like sochi's stone. Not sure if it is the same or not. But search for her gorgeous kitchen for some inspiration too.

Have a toothbrush handy for when things splatter from your cooktop especially pasta sauce. I agree with breezy, I don't think I could do it but if you don't mind the extra maintenance go for it!

    Hi PamIke,

When I read your subject, I read it as Damn Broke! I thought, I am too after spending too much time on GW and finishing my kitchen :)

I have to agree with some of the other posters, I don't think the bs is a good complement to your beautiful quartzite. Also I think the texture would draw the eye right to the bs and it would be a shame to not have the gorgeous counters be the showstopper in your kitchen.

    Good luck with your choices!

    Good Day!

Thanks to all for your comments! The granite is polished and I believe was used in a Casino project somewhere around here(at least that's what the salesman said, and these were leftover from the lot, hence the great price). Marcolo the granite does appear blueish probably because of the poor quality photo taken with my cell, but I must add at night in my home the piece I have appears more gray than white.

I did want a honed stone (or honed marble for that matter but not with all its glitches forementioned on this forum) With that said, I don't want to spend the extra $$'s to get that finish, and even though this is polished slab, the light color makes it appear less mirror-like.

I lean more towards a (french) country style than a modern, urbane style. Although beautiful the marble or glassy, glossy subway tiles wouldn't be my preference. The backsplash has a 3-D, rustic appeal which I was hoping would be the one element that tempers the stone, and to achieve my countrified vision. But maybe it's not possible to ..make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.. If not this, what would you suggest?
