Mixing Whites?

I don't have a picture handy, but the main floor of my house is totally open space which includes kitchen, dining area and a sitting area (with fireplace). The kitchen cabinets are going to be painted white as part of a general refresh (they're currently a cherry finish that I don't care for - not ACTUAL cherry). However, I have not decided on the exact shade of white. My question is this: seeing as the room is totally open, do the white cabinets and white trim have to be the same white?

IMO - and this is totally just me, but I always think that if there are two shades of white they should be noticeably different enough to look intentional. And, they should be either both "warm" or both "cool". And I don't love the mix of bright white with cream. I'm not a designer, though!

good question, and I do hope a designer weighs in.
In my opinion, color depends so much on the light -- I have grey walls, and never do my walls look the same shade. So - even if you used the identical white "color", they still wouldn't look the same.
