Kitchen cabinet colours! Help!

Hi Everyone!
We bought a home from the early 1970's that's in desperate
need of a kitchen reno that isn't in the budget right now. We would
like to freshen it up with painted cabinets, new hardware and maybe
a new counter. Currently the wooden cabinets are painted white but they're so dirty and the years of grime/stains won't come out. We have a 2 year old that will no doubt mucky up any new white painting we do so we're looking
for new colour ideas. My husband wants grey with black hardware but I worry it will be too dark. Please let me know if you have any suggestions! Excuse the mess :)
