Why is Ikea doing a SECOND kitchen sale?

I just noticed that cabinets are on sale again at Ikea. June 27 to mid-late August.

Why are they doing this? Are they trying to get rid of Akurum stock to prepare for the new Metod cabinets? If so, would this be a bad time to invest in cabinets? Should I wait for the new Metod cabinets?

Are they supposed to be better than Akurum?

Your post made me search (and I have an Akurum kitchen), and I found this information on the differences between the two:

There's a video on the Swedish IKEA site that shows the basics of the new system. It's a lot more customizable than the AKURUM cabinets---important if you want very specific storage and if you need to make the most of the space you have. (I wanted to wait for these cabinets but my old kitchen barely functioned at all and it wasn't worth waiting another year and a half.)

The video starts out with people speaking different languages about what they want in a kitchen, but then a narrator talks about the new system in English.

    From the UK site.

Forgot to say that last time (20+) years ago, when IKEA switched from metric to imperial, I bought a truck load of doors and drawer fronts for 2.00/piece.

I don't know the validity of this site, but interesting info on Ikea's new design and how they source their products. Looking at the new products, most are inset drawers/doors. Their sale may be to eliminate what we are familiar with to move into the new designs.

No, they're still full overlay (watch the assembly/installation videos or look at the catalog on ikea's UK site linked in nosoccermom's post). It's the light rail and cover panels that give that effect in the photo.

I have to say that I have doubts about the quality of the new system--seems to be a lot more plastic-y than akurum/faktum. This is another reason (besides the ikeafans kerfuffle) why I think I will look elsewhere next time. Those videos just don't fill me with confidence.

So excited! Renovating my approx 10x10 West Palm Beach, Fla. apt kitchen and going down in August to pick out cabinets. Akrum will do just fine. Does anybody have a recommendation for a kitchen contractor who will design/install IKEA cabinets?
    Thanks!!

The official installer for sunrise is a flat-pack assembly company, not really a kitchen contractor, although I imagine they've installed a lot of kitchens. I'd check angies list, craigslist, etc. or ask over at ikeafans.

I don't know why they are doing another sale so soon...I raced to get my order in on the last day of the previous sale and we aren't installing until this week so I feel like I have had my garage filled with cabinets and appliances for months unnecessarily...

This is my second Akurum kitchen...I have been very pleased. Interested to see what I gained by sticking with Akurum or lost by not getting all the new options w/Metod.

Well there is hope for me. My order placed during the April sale has yet to fully arrive. I have 1/4 so far. 20 more pieces arrived today. Perhaps cancelling and re ordering is what I need to do.

Have found a kitchen contractor in the Boca -Ft. Lauderdale area who is an IKEA specialist and designs, too. I am heading down on Sat. and will meet with him to see what's what. He has raves from references he sent me and I told him I hope they are not all his relatives:-).

Will go to Sunrise before I come home and see if I can order while the sale is still on, before I return to NJ.
