| As much as I want to be at the house right now to see the beautiful tub being carried in and installed. (It's been at a safe location for the construction, only appearing once to have her plumbing fitted) and all the faucets being installed...I can't stay there.
There is one man with one tooth installing the range hood. It took him 2 hours to read and understand the directions. I did see lots of 2x4's being attached to the joists in the ceiling (the duct cover will hide all that). This is a 42" wide Independent 1200cfm hood. Weighs about 90 lbs. The range is in place. He hung from the 2x4s to guarantee their strength. I just had to go. He hasn't cut the 10" hole into the house yet. I certainly don't want to be there for that. I will go back about 3:30--they usually knock off at 4. I'll post pictures later. |
Follow-Up Postings:
| Is anyone else there? Geez.. a lot could happen by 4pm. Good luck.... |

| deedles--...there might be another guy with a couple of teeth showing up to help this guy out. But you never know. I think it's good for him to stretch his comfort zone and learn something new. Continuing Education. Kind of. My dh stopped by at lunch to check in on him. He was out getting some HVAC parts. He said it looked ok. :0 |
| Yes, I understand! I am too nervous to go upstairs right now as they are installing the granite and quartz.I'm so curious but also a little scared. We both have to hope for the best and I am sure it will all turn out just fine! I can't wait to see your pictures! |

| OMGosh...laughing out loud!!! I want a picture of him hanging from the support frame! |

| Michelle--No you don't. |
| LOL, yes I am! We are living in the basement during the remodel. I'm trying to keep the dogs settled while they install. It's getting the best of me though, I think I'm going to sneak up there for a peek! |
| Ninnies! I watched every move during install, I hovered, guided, directed even when things weren't square. Bee, if it were me, I would be there under the range hood in case it fell..... with a mouth guard on. But I know, sometimes there is nothing you can do except hope and pray they get it right and prepare for a battle if they don't. weimom, send a little spy upstairs to give you updates, if you have one available. Can't wait for pics! |

| This is the stuff of nightmares! Hang in there, and I'll cross my fingers for you!!! |
| Oh Bee, that is such a visual!! Poor guy. Dental work is so expensive, he probably has 6 kids at home and puts himself last. Just hope and pray he has experience in what he is doing. I know 4:00 will not come soon enough for you! That is going to be in my mind all day now, a guy with one tooth hanging from the rafters. In the new house. Above the new range. Cutting a hole in the new roof. I'm cracking up. Sort of. |

| Have you broken out the wine yet? Are you half-way through a bottle? I probably would be, LOL! |

| Wine? Alcohol content is not high enough. I ended a note to the builder the other day with "I'm going to go throw up now". He feels my last-week stress. He's building next door! He gets it! Weimom--sneak up, snap photos and post here. It will help with distracting me. All I'm doing is laundry. Washing bedding for new house and trying to pack. Do it!!! |
| I know you are antsy to know what is going on. I'd want to be watching every step too. Got a nanny cam? The guy who delivered our brick had a few teeth missing, and his jeans were so torn up there was more skin than cloth on his legs. |

| I hope you covered your cooktop and bee-yootiful counters with cushions or something! I have visions of uni-tooth trying to hold up the hood... oh my. |
| I confess, I haven't been around much. Have moved on to the rest of the house. I do try to read posts but usually don't have time to reply. I just have to say bee, you really should have a blog. You have a wicked sense of humour and talent to boot. Thanks for the chuckle. Onto painting....oh and good luck with the hood. |
| Silly. Who needs teeth when you can just buy some at Wal-Mart? I get it. The guy showing up has the other tooth. OK. Enough. I'm cringing in my seat for you. |

| That sounds like me when DH is on the tractor bush-hogging on the hill behind our house. I have to leave because my nerves can't handle it, but I am petrified that when I leave there will be no one there to call the ambulance :(. |

| I was sick to my stomach when the ginormous piece of 4 cm marble was barely hauled in the house and hoisted, but I made myself be present. You MUST be there to supervise if your GC isn't! If anything gets damaged chipped, dented, etc, you NEED to be witness! Mr. MonoTooth might not be the most careful or responsible. You never know. |
| At least he read the directions, even if it took him two hours....some of the workers on our project refuse to read anything before diving in, with predictable results... |
| Amen! I had people who appeared to have all their teeth who were provided with installation instructions and diagrams, taped to the wall in place with additional writing on the drywall to clarify "here", and the still couldn't be bothered to read it. |
| Some of the best craftspeople I've known were missing more than a few teeth. (Growing up on well or cistern water can do that, you know. Particularly if one doesn't have money/access to dental care...) |

| Me, I'd be sitting there with my laptop drinking iced tea and just letting him do his thing. Until he started to do something stupid, like stand on the counter with no protection. I generally don't leave children unsupervised either. |
| i agree - time for some wine. I wish I could have been there for everything but not possible - the GC keeps a good handle on things - although not always on site. |

| I can't bring myselft to talk about it now. Just know the counters are fine. The range is fine. My husband took his blood pressure medicine so that's ok. All I can say is I know how he lost the teeth. I don't think it was due to bad water or lack of dental care. Not a friendly email being sent right about now from dh to foreman. Talk to you about it later.

| Oh yeah, my guys had great difficulty reading English. Diagrams were treasured. 2 hours is wonderful. Mine had lots of beautiful, bright, sparkly teeth and fabulous work outfits with leather utility belts, slung fashionably low on their trim hips. Not that I noticed. But they kept reassuring me, " ok to American code" |
| Uh oh. Yikes, Bee, that sounds a bit ominous. I hope everything turns out OK. |

| Oh Yikes....I hope you and DH are OK...please tell us the cabinets are OK too! |
| Oh s**t, what happened??? I told you to be there to spot him!! Well, as long as everyone has all their fingers and toes, everything else can be fixed. Now, on to the hard liquor. All kidding aside, I know how much time and effort and thought you put into your kitchens, having setbacks like this are a pain, but end up in the future being a funny story to tell a parties, especially parties being thrown in your kitchen. As you lead a tour of your kitchen you can stop at the range hood and retell the tale about unitooth or monotooth, both had me laughing, anyway, this too shall pass, but in the meantime there's the hard stuff. hugs! |
| Oh, dear. I hope all is well. (Wasn't being snarky about the teeth--I've just known people who lost 'em that way!) |

| Oh my gosh bee! I hope that whatever he did is easily corrected!! |
| Oh no!! I don't post much since we finished building our house, but I am on here constantly reading (my dh knows it as "that house website" I'm addicted to). I love following your posts and your beautiful creations. I hope whatever happened wasn't too bad since your counters and range are both fine. In my mind the hood fell on him and knocked out his last tooth...which probably shouldn't be funny but sure made me chuckle. Someday this will give you a chuckle, no matter what happened. In the meantime, go to a nice dinner and get liquored up...it's always worked for me ;-) |

| Eyegirlie - LOL - "hood fell on him and knocked out his last tooth". I shouldn't laugh either but that was funny! I just hope all is OK with Bee and Mr. Bee. PS. And I want to know how he lost all but one tooth. |

| Um. Is the range hood fine? |

| My thought exactly, Marcolo. And she ain't finding a new one of those around easily anywhere. Independent is kaput. |
| Yeah, that leaves the floors and the range hood. Not sounding good, but maybe it is better you weren't there to see it happen, whatever it was? ((( ))) |
| Crap BEE, I'm up can't sleep. 3:30am and now another reason to not be able to sleep! First thing I thought of after reading your post is what I saw at our floor install! A worker with TWo teeth, ragged clothes, looked homeless, and I worried because it didn't "feel" right, turns out he lost em all from too much alcohol and was drinking on the job. Unbeknown to me, I was hiding in the bedroom. When it was halfway done well, I just hope you didn't have a nightmare because of something as reckless as that |

| After a night's sleep and my dh is just mad not livid I can talk about it. Went in around 3:30. He was gone. I'm sure it was a very stressful day for him since he has never seen anything like a real hood before. The hood was up, the lights do work. On the island are two interesting items, no, 3. 1. The broken knob to turn the fan on. (hopefully a universal part, not something I ever dreamed would be an issue by buying a defunct company's fan. I was more worried about motors, etc. 2. The connectors were cut off laying there. Why the h*ll do you cut off connectors when all you have to do is plug one into the other? My dh too great pains to have this correctly set up so that it would not be too difficult for them. Apparently electrical is not his "thing" either because there is a hand written note on the cardboard with the words "My Guess" followed by some sort of electrical words .....right then Mr. Bee lost it. 3. He is struggling to get the duct work through the wall, there is a double layer of 2x4s at the top of the wall where he is trying to have it exit. He's trying to cut down the height of the vent duct he bought. He's in over his head. The job supervisor is off today but did respond to my dh's email. He will send an electrician to verify this is wired correctly and safely. The hvac company was in the house late yesterday to do the blower test, when they test the tightness of the house. He told me that they could make the part necessary . Someone needs to tell this guy. On a side note: The house was very tight they said. He also told me that the local inspectors are not enforcing any issues about makeup air now. When they redo the code they will. I told him I don't mind at all cracking a window, actually enjoy it when cooking. He said that is fine. Oh, and then when I was leaving, I was last one out of house, I realized that the plumbers left their giant trailer in the driveway overnight. No big deal. But wait, maybe it is...they are paving the driveway today. The plumbers are Amish, someone drops them off and pulls the trailer for them. Hopefully their driver can come back and move the trailer when they hear the news today. (My tub is sitting in the middle of the room, just waiting to be installed....it made it through all the doors. Yay *sigh* |
| Oh phew!! I had horrible visions of the hood falling during install or after, and smashing into your cooktop. DH and I installed ours together and boy was that thing heavy. Holding so much weight up was hard and more than a little scary (i.e., worrying about someone getting hurt). How does it look?? Any pictures yet? Looking forward to seeing the tub in place. Best, oldbat2be |

| oldbat2be--I will take some pictures today. My camera's battery was dead. I found out yesterday as I was trying to document the incident, that didn't make me very happy. I guess another reason for so much anger--this is the ONE thing the builder was responsible for in this kitchen. ONE. We got Dutch Wood, we sourced the granite because the place they used was not very good (did I mention my neighbor with the kitchen counters with an edge that changes in the kichen from one style to another?) we sourced the appliances and turns out I paid to have them installed...need to make a call about that because I thought buying this much $$ worth of appliances the stinking $100/appliance installation charge would have been waived or decreased, but I digress. They hood has been in the house since April (per their request) so they could get it up and read the instructions ahead of time......oh well. Nothing like getting it in place a week before settlement. maybe getting it in place.
| Sorry Bee.... I tell you, watching what you have done amazes me (concept to execution in such a short period). You are so good at this. Maybe builder just got used to you taking care of everything in the kitchen. Hope rest of house has turned out to your satisfaction. Off to waste more time pouring over backsplash choices. (You design and get built a fabulous kitchen in the time it takes me to select ONE element... you'll probably have finished your next kitchen by the time I get ours done!!) |
| Bee, I woke up rather late this morning , can you believe because I went to bed thinking of your beautiful kitchen and wondering what could have gone wrong and therefore not falling to sleep till at least 2am. I am a worrier, always have been but usually it is about my family and things going on here. I have an older kitchen which will never be updated so I just enjoy your process. Glad to read that the problems will be taken care of. |

| Bee, I'm just catching up on your thread, and am hoping today is a brand new day. Of course, everything has gone perfectly until you are just short of moving in! Of course it is the guy who looks least confident of all who is screwing things up, but I do hope things get straight for you today. I too am a worrier and strive for perfection, when none truly exists. Keep those adult beverages close, breathe deep and trust that things will work out because YOU insist that they do. |

| I went over today. OneToothWonderMan wasn't there. I'm sure he'll be back at some point. I left a note for him. But the plumber was there. He got my tub in. It's like a roller coaster of emotions.... Sorry many of you thought of me and couldn't sleep. It really does reinforce the sense of community we have here and how we are holding each others hands virtually. Thanks |
| Oh Bee. I've been thinking about you since yesterday afternoon. Sounds like things are repairable but very stressful. Please hang in there. Tami |

| Bee, Sorry to hear about that roller coaster ride of the last day or so. We experienced the same "issues" as we came down to the wire for settlement. The tub looks beautiful and you can soak in it and unwind with a big bottle of wine after all of these incidents when you move in. We've been in a year and even though talking about it still makes my blood boil, you enjoy your house and get over all of the ridiculous issues that took place. |
| Good luck with this Bee! Ol' Snaggletooth should have KNOWN that's exactly what he could have expected to find right there in the wall. And it looks like the builder didn't give this installation much forethought. BUT...as always...where there's a will there's a way and it will turn out fine in the end, I'm sure. The tub looks great! |
| Hopefully the image of that beautiful tub will get you through the day....and, hopefully, toothless wonder will realize he is in over his head! |
| Bee, I don't post very much but I am following along. I've got my fingers crossed that today goes well. It's hard to have someone who is not qualified doing something like your vent....shrudder. Get your GC in there! Nancy |

| widardnm--I must not have mentioned it....the job site supervisor, who probably hasn't had a weekday off in a very long time, is off today and Monday. This only would happen to us. Perhaps it's for medical reasons. Not that I wish that on anyone. But seriously....why now??? |
- Posted by bmorepanic (My Page) on Fri, Jun 8, 12 at 12:58
| Where that wall cut out is positioned would make me call the builder's office pronto. I'm also a little weirded by the dude's concept of centering the hood. It might be camera angles, but it doesn't look right. It's not like the site supervisor is the only person who can fix the placement. |
| Bee, Sounds like everything is going to work out fine so we can all get a good nights sleep tonight. Well, everyone except me. I won't sleep until you get those stunning marble floors covered! I see heavy tools, solvents, glue, things that scratch, and is that orange juice??? Please cover them! I'm laughing at all the ways you guys can describe a man with one tooth. Good luck, it's looking gorgeous so far. Can't wait for the whole house tour. |
| Here's me looking at the pictures of the hood - ooooh! Beautiful. And the tub..even nicer. Great progress! |

| Susied3: Poor guy. Dental work is so expensive, he probably has 6 kids at home and puts himself last. Amen. Somehow this message has been lost from this thread. It would be kinda' nice to hear that the jokesters who are reveling in this human being's misfortune are dedicating 5% of their kitchen remodeling budget to a dental fund for the guy. Sorry, but I don't see the humor. |

| I feel for you! I have been over to my house several times and found coffee rings and spot on my marble countertops. I had them rehoned once and went over this afternoon and some idiot had put his coffee cup on my marble again. We have a huge 9' walnut island covered in foam board. Someone decided they would put their dripping cup on my white marble (which I have covered myself TWICE since every time I cover it it gets uncovered) - spots again. I don't mind the spots and etching on my marble but I want to be the one to do it!!! Also had to move several items of metal electric looking hinges or something - several feet worth of rough metal. WHY would you put that on marble???? I think people just don't live like I do - I would be SO careful if I was in another persons house. Reminds me of my first house when the floor guy, with stain on his pants, sat on my brand new (unwrapped that morning) outdoor furniture, left a dark brown floor stain on my cushion , flipped the cushion with the zipper in front to hide it. Needless to say he paid for the replacement cushions. I can't wait to get these people out of my house!!!! |

| Where would we all be if there weren't idiots who hold jobs and make just enough money to get by without vacations, health insurance, and retirement? Someone should start an etiquette school for them so they understand (scarcasm). I realized that when a lovely young lady who cared for my mother put a nail polish remover soaked cotton ball on a nice piece of furniture and ruined the finish. How could I be mad at her? Was it her fault? How could she know? Don't expect so much from people. |

| I wasn't going to even comment any more. But really folks. This is not about the man's tooth. It was to paint the picture of the guy hanging from the 2x4s he installed in my kitchen. He isn't poor, he has a good job with a large company that does include health and dental benefits and vacation too! He is not a subcontractor who lives in the mountains and they picked him up standing outside at Home Depot to come work on my house for the day. My beef isn't with him, just so you all know. He is a very nice guy who is trying his best. The builder should be sending someone who knows how to install a range hood to do the job. If it was above this guy's level of skill, perhaps a call to a local hvac company or an appliance store could have had the job done lickety-split and correctly. The deal was that the builder was going to install all the appliances we bought. This is the only one they have to install. (and he pushed the 2 drawer under counter freezer into place for us) We are supposed to take possession of this house on Friday. We took the hood to the job site back in April. It has sat there on the floor all this time, because "we are getting to it"......We are down to under a week. I still need to take the duct cover back to the fabricator to have it cut to its exact dimensions now. I'm not sure if that can be done in this short of a time. Hopefully the lack of a duct cover will not cause them to fail any inspections.....especially if the inspector looks closely at what's happening up there... sorry if any of you were offended. I'll post pictures when everything is done. Bee |
| Bee - Good luck getting everything worked out. I look forward to seeing the completed pics of the whole house! |
| Well said, Bee. And yes, I think we should expect "so much" from people. Is it really so much for someone to be considerate of someone else's things? People should and do know better, they just tend not to care enough to be bothered. If we expect less from them, that's just what they'll give us and the next person's house/furniture/etc they work on. People tend to live up to the standards you expect out of them...at least the ones who half way care do. |
