I decided not to have light rails - but I have framed cabinets, so I get about 3/4" of space under the cabinet anyway, and my fluorescents are fairly low-profile. If you have frameless cabinets, you'll need a light rail.

You'll probably need them, especially if you have frameless cabinets. Here's my cabinets before the light rails went up and after. I think it makes a difference in how "finished" the kitchen looks.

If anyone has pictures of light rails on framless cabinets I would love to see them too. I am at the stage of final details on my Brookhaven cabinetry order and the light rails are my current obsession!

My cabinets (see above post) are frameless. The light rail is one of many trim pieces the cabinet company sent. Like all the trim, it's finished on all sides so it can be used in any way it's needed. Mine is mounted with the flat side out (the inside has an ogee edge) since I have shaker style cabinets. The light rail was installed after the lights were installed and are screwed up into the bottom of the cabinets.

Mine are not frameless but here they are before and after. My lighting is Kichler linear strips so I really did not need them. It does give a finished look.

My husband didn't think we *needed* the under-cabinet molding; but I really wanted it. Once it was installed, he LOVED it and was so glad we did it.

I think it is one of my favorite details, and makes everything look so *finished*.
