I am trying to decide what shade of flooring to pair with my dark, espresso cabinets. the countertops will be light (Cambria Torquay) and all the trim/baseboards will be white. the floor will be site finished white oak in random widths. see attached photo example which is a similar floor our guys just did. any thoughts on how dark to go? anyone with pics?? I like dark, but don't want the room to feel too dark. thanks!

Sorry I have no pics to post now. But we are in the middle of a remodel. We too chose dark espresso cabinets, almost black, along with Cambria Torquay countertops! Our hardwood floors were just installed. We chose #1 Red Oak 3 1/4" width. We are going with a 3 coat clear poly finish, no stain. We like the look of a lighter floor with the dark cabinets, and to get the stain applied would be more money on an "already spent more than expected" project.

We are still a solid month away from having everything done, so I might not be able to get pics in time to help you. Good luck!

Most of my cabs are cherry, but the island and the lower cabinet pictured below are espresso. The floors and walls are natural red oak. I like the contrast.

I would be careful to keep the floor different from the espresso cabs. which, as dark as they are, means lighter.

The right side of the flooring is overexposed in the afternoon light flooding in the open door. The color is more accurate on the left side of the cab.

Thank you both for your thoughts! I think light/natural is the way to go. Bells - your floors are beautiful! Takkone - cannot wait to see pics!!

We've been debating the same thing. Really like the espresso cabinets. But, also want our hardwood to be dark. AND we are favoring dark granite. The only thing that was going "light" was our backsplash. I'm not certain what we're going to do. It's likely that we're going with the darker floors, and mid-colored cherry cabinets and dark granite. If we can ever get everything ironed out with our GC.

Ok, I take back what I said about liking a "lighter floor with dark cabinets." The more and more we looked around the darker we liked the floor! We brought a few scraps of our Red Oak floor to a local paint store. They stained three pieces of wood with three different colors. The one we liked the best was made by Zar, Modern Walnut.

Here is a link that might be useful: Zar stain colors

Wish I had a picture, but.... I have distressed hickory through the whole house, including the master bath, where I have an espresso vanity. i think it looks great. The vanity top is Alabama white marble, and the shower is AO Catarina.
